Join the Arrival Survivor Team
Last fall, 650 people served on the Arrival Survivor Team (AST).

3:45 p.m., July 23, 2003--It’s almost time for parents and families to bring the members of the Class of 2007 to UD, and faculty, staff and upperclassmen can help welcome these newest Blue Hens by signing up to be on the Arrival Survivor Team.
Team members help new students and their families move into their residence hall rooms on Freshman Check-in Day, Sunday, Aug. 31. Last fall, 650 people served on the Arrival Survivor Team (AST).

“This activity assists students and their parents in the transition to the University and is the first step in extending a warm welcome to them. It begins to build the strong and positive community that enhances every student's living and learning experience,” Frank Newton, assistant director of residence life, said.

Thirteen years ago, the Sigma Chi fraternity developed the team as a service project to assist first-year students in the Dickinson Complex. The Office of Residence Life assumed responsibility for the program 11 years ago, and the team has grown every year since.

All areas of campus are served by AST volunteers, on three-hour shifts scheduled from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers can request to be assigned as a group, and groups or individuals may even request a specific area of campus. Every effort will be made to accommodate requests, but the first priority is to ensure that all areas have AST volunteers.

There also are a limited number of slots available for lobby greeters, who welcome students and parents to the hall and direct them to the check-in table or to their rooms.

The majority of freshmen live in the Dickinson Complex (LIFE Program students), the Rodney Complex, the Russell Complex (honors students), Lane Hall, Thompson Hall, Smyth Hall, Squire Hall, Warner Hall and Ray Street . A few freshmen also live in Christiana Towers. New transfer students will be moving in to Pencader, Ray Street and Christiana Towers.

Faculty, staff, students and alumni who wish to volunteer should contact Newton at 831-2814 by Friday, July 25, or apply online at [www.udel.edu/reslife/students/ast.html].
