Newark to celebrate Memorial Day May 14-16

3:10 p.m., May 4, 2004--The city of Newark will honor those who died in service to their country with a parade, memorial ceremony, outdoor concert and Civil War reenactment from May 14-16.

The 61st New York Regiment will set up a Civil War camp Friday evening, May 14, through Sunday morning, May 16, at White Clay Creek State Park. Park entrance fees will be in effect.

A “Memorial Concert” will be held from 3-4 p.m., Saturday, on the Academy Building lawn at Main and Academy streets. The concert is presented by the Newark Memorial Day Committee and the Newark Business Association.

The Newark Armed Forces ceremonies and parade will begin at 1 p.m., Sunday, with a full military ceremony, including music by military bands, on The Green at UD.

This year’s parade, which is dedicated to World War II veterans and the U.S. Coast Guard, begins at 2 p.m. The parade will travel east on Main Street from South College Avenue to Chapel Street, go a block south to Delaware Avenue and then proceed west to Academy Street where it will end.

Parade participants will include historic military, active duty, reserve ROTC, Jr. ROTC and veterans units. Also participating will be community groups and organizations.
