New antispam tool available

9:08 a.m., April 5, 2004--E-mail users at UD have a new tool that can help fight unsolicited commercial e-mail, also known as spam.

UD has obtained a license for CanIt, software that can filter spam from e-mail received at the University's central mail server or forwarded using the UDelNet network page to another server.

Leila Lyons, director of IT User Services, said preliminary testing showed that CanIt successfully identifies over three-quarters of the spam directed at udel.edu inboxes.

“No anti-spam solution is foolproof,” Dan Grim, executive director of IT Network and System Services, said. “Even though spammers always try new ways to ‘fake’ legitimate e-mail, CanIt should significantly reduce the amount of spam that our users have to see every day.”

E-mail users who choose to use CanIt do not need to download any software but must first log in to UD's CanIt web site to opt into spam scanning and enable cookies on the web browser.

“If you are worried about losing any legitimate e-mail, you can choose to have CanIt deliver all your e-mail to you, advising you which messages it thinks are spam,” Grim said. “Or, you can tell it to reject suspected spam outright or to hold information about suspected spam for your inspection.”
