Fightin Blue Hens Today also offers a look back at the coaches and players who have contributed to UDs rich athletic heritage. Besides helping True Blue Hens fans savor the memory of the 2003 national championship football season, this instant keepsake will make readers ready for the coming season when Delaware kicks off against New Hampshire on Sept. 2 at Tubby Raymond Field in Delaware Stadium. This has been a tremendous year for UD athletics, and that is reflected in the 2004 edition of Fightin Blue Hens Today, Neil Thomas, the publications editor-in-chief and senior editorial coordinator in the Office of Public Relations, said. The publication features stories on the NCAA Division I-AA football championship, as well as Tubby Raymonds induction into the College Football Hall of Fame and in depth interviews with head basketball coaches Tina Martin and David Henderson. Fans who cheered their Fightin Blue Hens through an incredible 2003 football season filled with nail-biting victories over the universities of New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts and Villanova, as well as the string of playoff victories that culminated with a 40-0 win over Colgate in Chattanooga, Tenn., also will enjoy a recap of the championship season and the celebration held Feb. 10 at the Bob Carpenter Center. While the Blue Hens were dominant on the gridiron this season, UD was holding its own on the hardwoods against tough competition in the Colonial Athletic Association. In a seven-page story, UD head basketball coaches Martin and Henderson share their thoughts on the past season and where their teams are headed. Besides chronicling the success of todays coaches, the magazine also recognizes the efforts of College Football Hall of Fame coaches William Murray, David M. Nelson and Harold R. Tubby Raymond. One of nine individuals selected to the divisional hall of fame that includes coaches and players from NCAA Divisions I-AA and III and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, Raymond led the Blue Hens to 300 wins during a 36-year career as head coach. UD sports enthusiasts can read about the achievements of their favorite UD teams and athletes during the 2003-04 season, including sections devoted to UDs outstanding mens and womens athletes. Also showcased is Julie Van Deusen, the most accomplished diver in UD history, who recently was named NCAA Woman of the Year for Delaware. Designed by Keith Heckert, an art director in the Office of Public Relations, the magazine also recognizes the contribution of UDs Marching Band as an integral part of the fall football scene at Delaware Stadium and helps celebrate that lovable mascot YoUDees 10th birthday.
