Delaware’s Ames presented CAA leadership award

Mike Ames has been presented the CAA’s Dean Ehlers Leadership Award.
9:10 a.m., March 5, 2004--University of Delaware senior guard Mike Ames was presented with the Dean Ehlers Leadership Award during the Colonial Athletic Association men's basketball awards banquet at the Downtown Marriott on Thursday night in Richmond, Va.

Ames also earned second team All-CAA and All-Academic honors. He was honored with the Ehlers Award for his sportsmanship, leadership and contributions on the basketball court and in the community.

Ames is averaging a team-high 15.3 points per game this season, which ranks fifth in the CAA. He is also fifth in the league in three-point field goal percentage and leads the league in free throw percentage. He is Delaware's all-time leader in three-point field goals with 224 in his career.

In the community, Ames has worked with Special Olympics Delaware, visited the DuPont Children's Hospital with his teammates and participated in Boys and Girls Club programs locally and in his hometown of Phoenixville.

“I am very honored to win this award,” Ames, the first UD student-athlete to be so honored, said. “It is very humbling considering the quality of the other nominees. I've always tried to do the right thing. As student-athletes, we are role models and we need to take advantage of that and set a good example.”

Another Fightin’ Blue Hen recognized during the banquet was junior guard Mike Slattery, who earned third-team All-CAA and All-Academic honors. Slattery leads the CAA and is 17th in NCAA Division I in assists at 6.0 per game. He is also ninth in the conference in steals and is averaging 10.1 points per game.

Senior Domonic Jones of Virginia Commonwealth University was named the CAA Player of the Year while freshman Corey Cofield of the College of William & Mary was named the Rookie of the Year.

Drexel University freshman Bashir Mason was named CAA Defensive Player of the Year and his coach, Bruiser Flint, was named the CAA Coach of the Year.

Also named to the first team were Alex Loughton of Old Dominion University, Adam Hess of William & Mary, Kenny Adeleke of Hofstra University, Phil Goss of Drexel and Jai Lewis of George Mason University.

In addition to Ames, the second team featured Troy Godwin of Virginia Commonwealth, Sean Brooks and Tim Whitworth of Drexel and Mark Davis of George.

Joining Slattery on the third team were Dwayne Broyles of James Madison University, John Waller and Isaiah Hunter of Old Dominion and Cofield of William & Mary.

In addition to Cofield, the all-rookie team featured Mason of Drexel, Loren Stokes of Hofstra, Arnaud Dahi of Old Dominion and Ray Barbosa of James Madison.
