UD hosts annual bereavement teleconference April 28

2:30 p.m., April 13, 2004--The Division of Special Programs in the College of Health and Nursing Sciences will host the annual national bereavement teleconference from 1:30-4 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, in Trabant University Center Theatre.

The event, which will be moderated by Cokie Roberts of ABC News, will focus on “Living With Grief: Alzheimer’s Disease.”

A panel of experts will discuss what is known about the diagnosis, progression and treatment of the disease; explore some programs for patients and caregivers coping with Alzheimer’s; focus on the grief that patients and families face during the course of the illness; and examine the challenges and opportunities that Alzheimer’s disease presents to clinicians, caregivers, hospice workers and policy advocates.

The panel also will discuss other forms of dementia.

Expected to reach an estimated 125,000 people nationwide, via live satellite broadcast, the teleconference will benefit professionals who support communities and help individuals cope with the grief and loss associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

The teleconference is produced by Hospice Foundation of America, a nonprofit organization working to educate health-care professionals and the families they serve on issues relating to illness, loss and grief.

After the teleconference, UD will host several local panelists, including Claire Day of the Delaware chapter of Alzheimer’s Association and Florence Collins, whose husband, Russell, suffers from Alzheimer’s-related dementia.

The Collinses recently participated in a television series featuring first-person accounts of the daily struggles and joys of family caregiving. Their video diary will be shown as part of the discussion, which will include the needs and challenges experienced by family caregivers and the resources available to support them.

The program, which is free and open to the public, is sponsored by the Foundation for End-of-Life Care, in cooperation with the Adventist Communication Network, Alzheimer’s Association, U.S. Administration on Aging and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
