Public Allies Delaware celebrates 10th year Feb. 5

4:45 p.m., Jan. 28, 2004--Public Allies Delaware, a leadership development program that prepares young adults for careers in public service, will celebrate 10 years of service on Thursday evening, Feb. 5, at the Wyndham Hotel in Wilmington. Public Allies is a program of UD’s Center for Community Research and Service.

The featured speakers will be the founders of the Delaware office—Dr. Suzanne Sysko, now a physician in Baltimore, and Antoine Allen, formerly president of the Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League and now with MBNA America Bank.

The public event begins at 6 p.m. with a reception. Dinner, a recognition program and a reunion will follow. Tickets are $50, and a discount is available for program alumni. For reservations, call 573-4438 or e-mail [ljackson@udel.edu].

Public Allies’ mission is to advance diverse young leaders to strengthen communities, nonprofits and civic participation. Each year the program recruits 20 to 25 individuals between 18 and 20 and offers them 10-month apprenticeships with local nonprofit organizations. Since the local program started in 1994, some 163 Public Allies interns have worked at more than 100 community agencies, contributing more than 250,000 hours of service and serving more than 150,000 Delawareans.

For more information about Public Allies, contact the Wilmington office at 573-4438 or the Georgetown office at (302) 856 2585, extension 329, or visit the web site at [http://www.udel.edu/publicallies].
