Pledge now in UD’s United Way campaign
 2:10 p.m., Oct. 20, 2003--Continuing its 30-plus-year tradition of partnering with United Way during its annual fund drive, the University of Delaware has launched its employee campaign starting today, Monday, Oct. 20.
The campuswide initiative, which aims to collect $175,000 in pledges before its conclusion Friday, Nov. 14, will contribute to United Way of Delaware’s $28.3 million goal for 2003.
To further facilitate pledging, a convenient URL link [www.udel.edu/unitedway] has been developed this year to give employees the option of making secure online pledges. (In order to properly access the link, pledgers need Internet Explorer, the University’s browser of choice. An accompanying sidebar gives downloading instructions.)

If you want to make a pledge through [www.udel.edu/unitedway] you’ll first need to download the Internet Explorer (IE) browser. Below are step-by-step instructions for doing this successfully.
1. First determine whether or not you have IE. Do this by clicking the “Start” button of your PC and checking under “Programs.” (If you work on a Mac, you can check by clicking on the apple icon and going to the “Recent Items” menu. ) If you do have IE, open it and type in the pledge URL [www.udel.edu/unitedway]. If you don’t have IE, continue to step two.
2. Save your work! You will be required to restart your computer after downloading the IE software.
3. Using your existing browser, type in UD’s approved software downloading URL [udploy.udel.edu]. This will take you directly to a page where you may automatically download IE for either a PC or a Mac.

Starting today, all salaried and professional employees will receive an e-mail assigning them a United Way pledge-specific username and passcode. These are different from the usernames and passcodes employees normally use to conduct University business and are generated from employee numbers (not Social Security numbers). In order to make an electronic United Way pledge, these specific usernames and passcodes are necessary, so it is important that employees save them in a secure and easily memorized place for handy pledging access during the campaign.
“We’re replacing the paper pledge forms with electronic pledge forms this year because they require far less paperwork,” UD United Way campaign chair, Richie Holland, manager of human resources, said. “Online pledging allows solicitors to play the role of cheerleaders rather than administrators.”
In addition, the electronic pledge forms help ensure privacy and give donors immediate confirmation of their pledge via an e-mail receipt. The forms also automatically ensure that donors are eligible for incentive prizes.
According to President David P. Roselle, who spoke during the campaign kick-off ceremony Tuesday, Oct. 14, the $175, 000 goal is already on its way to being met, because of the generosity of UD Pacesetters and retirees.
“We know from last year’s successful campaign that, through your good efforts and the generosity of our colleagues, we are able to reach a goal of $175,000,” Roselle said, addressing an audience of 135 employee solicitors. “Early indicators are good. Our Pacesetters’ Campaign has just concluded and 57 donors have pledged $26,544.16. That’s up over last year. Our retirees also have been contacted and they have donated so far in excess of $3,000. We hope that number will grow.”
Holland also is enthusiastic about the 2003 campaign and says he believes that appointing solicitors to each department within the University gives the campaign added appeal and accessibility.
“Solicitors in each department publicize the campaign, encouraging their colleagues to pledge,” Holland said. “They also are available to answer questions and make the pledging process as easy as possible.”
