New 'Citizenship Exam' required of new students
2:20 p.m., July 11, 2003--When students new to UD arrive in Newark to attend DelaWorld orientation sessions, there is much to learn, including guidelines for becoming good citizens online and in the community.

To better inform new students about standards of behavior on campus and in the city of Newark, UD has created the University Community Citizenship Examination (UCCE). The online quiz assesses student awareness of aspects of University life and sets the parameters of acceptable behavior on campus and in the community.
The multiple-choice quiz covers wide-ranging subjects, including academic honesty, alcohol use, living in Newark, classroom behavior, health and safety and living in residence halls.
The premise is that students will understand that the University expects them to be good citizens and knowledgeable about the behavioral standards and values that exist here, John Bishop, associate vice president in the Center for Counseling and Student Development, said. Because these expectations might be quite different than those in their own family or hometown, it is only fair that we inform students in every possible way of our expectations.
Bishop said that because it addresses issues specific to UD and the city of Newark, the quiz is an important way to help new students learn about their responsibilities as a part of the DelaWorld experience.
I hope that this will be an effective way to engage students in understanding the roles and responsibilities they assume as they enter UD, Bishop said. It also may serve as an important reminder that students become a part of the city of Newark as they matriculate here.
The creation of the quiz represents a coordinated effort of the Office of the President and the Division of Student Life, as well as the Building Responsibility Coalition, the Student Alcohol Use Committee, Wellspring, and the offices of Judicial Affairs, Public Safety, Residence Life and of faculty and staff representatives.
UCCEs design, Bishop said, is modeled on UDs Electronic Community Citizenship Examination (ECCE), a 10-question, multiple-choice quiz that helps to ensure that students using the computing network understand their basic responsibilities as members of UDs online community. Before taking the ECCE, students are advised to read the Responsible Computing Manual for Students at [www.udel.edu/ecce/student-toc.html].
Students are eligible to take both quizzes once they have established a PIN (personal identification number) as part of their DelaWorld new-student orientation experience.
After successfully completing the UCCE and ECCE quizzes, students must choose usernames and passwords before they can use UDs computing network.
