Poster presentations sought for Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium

4:50 p.m., July 31, 2003--Undergraduate students in the sciences doing research at UD this summer are invited to submit the results of their research in poster form for display at the Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium, Thursday, Aug. 14, in the lounge on the ground floor of McKinley Laboratory.

A 200-word abstract should be sent to Hal White, project director and professor of chemistry and biochemistry, by Aug. 7. White can be reached at 831-2908 or by e-mail at [halwhite@udel.edu]. Faculty, students and the public are welcome to attend the poster session and question students about their work.

The symposium poster session, sponsored by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), is open to all undergraduate research students in the sciences, math and engineering.

The symposium starts at 11:30 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 14, in Brown Lab auditorium with a lecture by Michael Summers, an HHMI investigator from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He will discuss "NMR of HIV-1 Proteins: From Biological Function to the Discovery of New Antivirals."

Summers’ lecture will be followed, from 1-3 p.m., by the undergraduate student poster session and oral presentations. Students will present their posters as they would at a national poster competition.

Meanwhile, students whose work has progressed toward publication of their findings will make oral presentations in room 061 McKinley Lab, followed by an informal gathering with Summers from 3- 3:40 p.m.

Refreshments will be served in the poster display area.
