Assistance program offers lunchtime seminars and support

2:55 p.m., Sept. 16, 2003--The Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (FSAP), will offer a series of lunchtime seminars for employees this fall.

The noon-1:15 p.m. seminars, at various locations, include:

  • “Becoming Your Own Psychic: Connecting With Your Intuition," Thursday, Sept. 25, Room 261, 413 Academy St. This experimental seminar, conducted by trainer, author and consultant Chris Largent, offers a look at each individual’s inner abilities while exploring how participants can discover their inner psychic.

  • “How Do YOU React To Conflict: Recognizing Your Conflict Management Style,” Tuesday, Oct. 14, Ewing Room, Perkins Student Center. Patricia “Pattie” Porter and Donna Tuites, FSAP counselors, offer techniques for identifying individual conflict-management styles in order to better deal with situations in one’s professional and personal life.

  • “Energize Yourself!”, Thursday, Nov. 6, Room 130, General Services Building, 222 South Chapel St. Because being stressed and tired can be linked to individual choices, the workshop will identify energy sources and the ways they can be scattered. Nancy Zippe Coale, freelance food columnist for The News Journal and a Reiki master of energy healing, will share coping skills and help participants to learn how to live more consciously.

  • “Handling Grief at the Holidays”, Monday, Nov. 17, Room 130, General Services Building, 222 South Chapel St. Presented by Katherine Angell, family aftercare coordinator for Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes, the seminar offers encouragement, hope and support for those who feel that the holidays lack joy because they are grieving the death of a loved one. The workshop will focus on what is normal, what to expect and how to cope. Bereaved families can honor memories and traditions that include loved ones and also can begin new customs.

  • “Raising ‘Kids Who Can’: Building Your Child's Self- Esteem”, Tuesdays, Dec. 2 and 9, Room 130, General Services Building, 222 South Chapel St. This two-part workshop, conducted by Yvonne Nass, parent education coordinator for Child Inc., and Tuites in FSAP, will provide opportunities for parents of both young and school-aged children to learn how to enhance children's self-esteem while helping them develop courage. Participants also will get a clearer picture of what a child with high self-esteem—“ a "child who can"—looks like.

Support groups

Phoenix is an open and ongoing psycho-educational support group for women in transition in their relationships. The group covers many issues including achieving independence, letting go, dealing with fears (e.g., being on your own, finances), self-esteem/assertiveness and the importance of self-care.

Phoenix meets twice monthly over the lunch hour. Interested individuals can schedule an appointment with group facilitators Cecily Sawyer-Harmon, FSAP coordinator, or Tuites.

Support Group for Men is an open and ongoing psycho-educational group for men who are dealing with stressful situations. The group addresses stress management techniques, trigger points, effective responses to anger and handling difficult situations. It also examines boundaries in relationships, letting go of resentments and constructive communication.

The men’s support group meets twice monthly from 10-11:30 a.m. Interested parties can call Porter at 831-2414 to schedule an appointment.

Participants may bring their lunches and beverages and dessert will be provided. Deadline for registration is one week before the program. For more information or to register, call Julie Skeen at 831-2414, visit the FSAP website at [www.udel.edu/fsap], or send e-mail to [jskeen@udel.edu].
