First ticket order deadline set Aug. 27 for Freshman Family Weekend, Sept. 12-14

4:15 p.m., Aug. 21, 2003--Attention parents, grandparents and guardians: The first ticket order deadline for Freshman Family Weekend is Wednesday, Aug. 27. Ordering by then allows parents and families to choose whether their tickets are mailed in advance OR held for pick-up at UD box offices between Monday, Sept. 8, and Saturday, Sept. 13.

Orders received between Thursday, Aug. 28, and the final ticket order deadline Wednesday, Sept. 3, automatically will be held for pick-up at UD box offices.

Planned for Friday-Sunday, Sept. 12-14, Freshman Family Weekend promises ample entertainment and fun and provides a great opportunity to visit your favorite new freshman or transfer student and see campus life in full swing.

Presented by the Office of University Relations, the weekend is designed to give parents and family members of new freshmen and transfer students a chance to reunite and also explore the University and Newark communities.

Below is a summary of some major activities. For more information about the weekend, including a complete schedule of events and instructions for ordering tickets, visit the Freshman Family Weekend web site [www.udel.edu/parents] or consult the Freshman Family Weekend brochure that was recently mailed to all parents and families of new students. Ticket purchases must be made using the order form enclosed in the brochure or downloaded from the web site, and must be received at the Bob Carpenter Box Office no later than Wednesday, Sept. 3. Ticket orders received after this date will not be processed.

Friday, Sept. 12

The Second City Comedy troupe, presented by UD’s Student Centers Programming Advisory Board (SCPAB), kicks off festivities on Friday with two antic performances at 7:30 and 10 p.m. in Mitchell Hall. Known for launching the careers of Bill Murray, John Belushi and Mike Myers, the long-running ensemble lampoons political, social and cultural inconsistencies. Tickets are $10 for UD students and $15 for all others. All seating is reserved.

Also scheduled for Friday, Sept. 12, is “Jazz on The Green,” featuring music by UD’s Faculty Jazz Ensemble. From 8-10 p.m., listeners will be treated to lively music and complimentary refreshments on The Green outside Mitchell Hall. Admission is free.

Saturday, Sept. 13
A program called “Lunch and Learn” will be offered from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on The Green outside Gore Hall. Attendees will learn about UD’s academic programs and student services through informal conversations with administrators. Faculty and staff members from academic and student services departments also will be available to answer questions. Several combination meals, featuring a variety of sandwiches, side dishes and beverages, will be offered for purchase at $7. Admission is free.

Additionally on the meet-and-greet agenda, the Center for Black Culture, located at 192 South College Ave., will hold an open house from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Visitors will have a chance to speak with center staff and learn about ongoing and upcoming programs. Admission is free.

Information sessions, offered from12:30-2:30 p.m. in Gore Hall, will inform parents and families about the many resources available to students in the areas of study abroad, career development and study skills.

“Tunngasugitsi” (Welcome!), a combined talk and tour at the University Gallery, will be offered from 1-2 p.m. Made possible, in part, by the UD Center for International Studies, the activity will treat visitors to an exhibit of Inuit drawings, prints, sculptures and artifacts, and will feature a talk by Peter Irniq, the cultural leader of Nunavut, the territory recognized as the home of the Inuit in the Canadian Arctic. He will speak about traditional Inuit knowledge. Admission is free, but advance reservations, made on the Freshman Family Weekend order form, are requested for planning purposes.

“Back to Class—Faculty Lectures” will take place from 2:30-4:30 p.m. at Gore Hall. An opportunity for visitors to sample college education, the program provides parents and families with the chance to take part in thought-provoking lectures presented by UD professors. The lectures will cover a range of academic disciplines, including the arts and humanities, business, education and natural and social sciences. Information on specific lectures will be available on the web site [www.udel.edu/parents] and at the Freshman Family Weekend Information Table in the Gore Hall Rotunda on Saturday, Sept. 13. Admission is free, but advance reservations, made on the Freshman Family Weekend order form, are requested for planning purposes.

A tailgate dinner and pep rally will be held from 5-7 p.m. in field north of Delaware Stadium. The open-air buffet, featuring an assortment of salads, grilled items, beverages and desserts, offers diners the opportunity to meet and mingle in a relaxed, festive atmosphere. Throughout dinner, live entertainment by the Royal Palm Steel Band will be presented by WSFS Bank. At 6 p.m., the UD Marching Band, cheerleaders, dance team and YoUDee mascot will fill the field with UD spirit. Dinner is $18 per person for adults and $8 per person for children under age 8.

At 7 p.m., The Fightin’ Blue Hens will cap the day when they take on the University of Richmond on Tubby Raymond Field in Delaware Stadium. Tickets are $17 a person. Seating in the west and east grandstands is reserved. Please note that tickets for the south endzone are not available for purchase.

Sunday, Sept. 14

Newark Community Day (presented by the City of Newark, Newark Arts Alliance, UD, Christina School District, and the Downtown Newark Partnership) offers visiting families the opportunity to explore downtown Newark. Held along Main Street and at designated University sites, including The Green and the Academy Lawn. The free festival runs from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Sunday. Activities include live entertainment on four stages, an art loop, a sidewalk chalk festival, arts and crafts displays and retail and dining specials.

Several other activities, many of them complimentary and designed specifically for visiting families of new students, will run throughout the weekend.
