60 Newark merchants offer Title Town discounts 5:28 p.m., Feb. 20, 2004--Newark has declared itself Title Town in honor of the NCAA-IAA national championship won by UDs Fightin Blue Hens and the state football championship won by the Newark High School Yellowjackets in December. The student athletes, administrations, staff, and athletic coaches associated with the University of Delaware and Newark High School are to be commended and congratulated for their exceptional accomplishments, Newark Mayor Hal Godwin said during the proclamation ceremonies. To join in the community celebration of these amazing athletic feats, downtown Newark merchants are offering Title Town specials. More than 60 businesses are offering special promotions, discounts, and/or giveaways celebrating University of Delaware and Newark High School athletics. The specials offered are as diverse as the businesses providing them. For example, Newark Newsstand is offering 50 percent off all 2004 calendars and 10 percent off New York Times best sellers. Youve Been Framed is offering 10-60 percent off select items, including framed UD and Newark prints. Restaurants and eateries are offering discounts of 10-20 percent, as well as buy one, get one entrees. Personal service establishments are offering discounts on products and services, and professional service businesses are also participating by providing free subscriptions to professional journals, free consultations and giveaways. The city of Newark also is participating. Stop by the Downtown Parking Office and show us your UD or NHS spirit, and well give you an hour of free parking in any municipal lot, Carl F. Luft, city manager, said. Look for Title Town posters in the windows of all participating merchants, identifying them as an official Title Town merchant. Its a great time to show your community spirit, and to cash in on the community spirit of our downtown businesses. Merchants are proud to be a part of this communityand we are happy when we can share that pride with our customers, John Corradin, chairperson of the Downtown Newark Partnerships merchants committee and owner of The Days of Knights gaming store on Main Street, said. In addition to the proclamation and merchant promotions, the City of Newark, UD and the Downtown Newark Partnership (DNP) are cooperating to install a colorful 6 x 90 Title Town banner at the eastern entrance to downtown Newark. The banner was designed by the University of Delaware and features both schools mascots and athletic achievements and announces Newark as Title Town. The city and DNP are jointly funding the banner production and installation. I am looking forward to the banner installation. Its a great way to let the greater Newark area know that Newark is truly a community of champions! Downtown Newark is proud to be a part of the Title Town celebration, said Maureen Feeney Roser, assistant planning director and administrator of DNP activities. The banner is slated to be installed at the intersection of Kirkwood Highway and Cleveland Avenue during the week of Feb. 23. To learn how to subscribe to UDaily, click here. |
