Van Deusen selected UD's top female athlete |

9:45 a.m., May 16, 2003--Julie Van Deusen, the most accomplished diver in University of Delaware history, was honored as the Outstanding Senior Female Athlete of the Year during the annual women's intercollegiate athletics award banquet held Wednesday night, May 21, at the Trabant University Center.
Van Deusen, a senior from Bear, becomes the first diver in UD history to earn the award and just the third member of the swimming and diving teamjoining Kim Castellanos in 1994 and Nancy Davis in 1997to be so honored. The award is determined by a vote of the head coaches of the 12 womens intercollegiate sports.
Van Deusen became the most accomplished diver in UD history during two seasons of competition under head coach John Hayman and diving coach John Schuster. She transferred to Delaware from Syracuse University.
Van Deusen never lost a dual meet competition in either the one-meter or three-meter event while competing as a Fightin Blue Hen and was named the Colonial Athletic Association Female Diver of the Year each of the past two seasons. She won the three-meter title and was second in the one-meter at the 2002 CAA championships, then won the one-meter title and was second in the three-meter in the 2003 championships.
With the 2002 title, Van Deusen became the first Delaware student-athlete to win a title in CAA championship competition.
In 2002, Van Deusen went on to Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) and NCAA championships. She placed third in the three-meter and fourth in the one-meter at the 2002 ECAC championships and earned three third-place finishes in two years at the NCAA Zone A diving championships.
Her showing at the 2002 NCAA zone diving competition qualified her for the 2002 NCAA national championships at the University of Texas, where she placed 32nd in the one-meter event and 35th in the three-meter event. She was the first competitor in UD swimming and diving history to qualify for the NCAA meet.
A Verizon College Sports Information Directors of America Academic (CoSIDA) All-American nominee, Van Deusen is an honor student as an exercise physiology major with a minor in strength and conditioning.

BASKETBALL: Senior guard Allison Trapp enjoyed an outstanding season for the women's basketball squad, leading the team to its fourth straight 20-win season (22-9), a share of the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title and a berth in the Women's National Invitation Tournament for the second straight year. She was a member of teams that posted a three-year record of 71-21 and made three straight postseason appearances. A transfer from East Carolina University, Trapp became just the second player in UD history to surpass the 1,000-point mark (1,071). As a senior, she was runner-up for CAA Player of the Year honors, earned first team All-CAA laurels and was named CAA Co-Defensive Player of the Year. She averaged a team-best 16.3 points per game while leading the team with 73 steals. Trapp scored 20 or more points 10 times, including a career-high 34 against Hofstra University early in the season when she hit 12 straight shots, a UD record. She also was named the Most Valuable Player in leading the Blue Hens to the Dartmouth Tournament title in December.
CROSS COUNTRY, INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD AND OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD: Senior Erin Gemmill was a triple winner, earning team Most Valuable Player awards in cross country, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. After transferring to Delaware from Lehigh University, Gemmill set six school records and captured 11 individual meet titles in just two seasons. She set UD records outdoors in the 800 meters (2:143.84), the 4 x 400 meter relay (3:54.24) and sprint medley relay, and set UD indoor records in the 4 x 400 meter relay (3:54.24) and in the 800 meters (2:15.84). She also holds the No. 2 all-time indoor time in the 1,500 meters and the No. 4 all-time best time in the indoor mile at UD. She led the Blue Hen cross country team in all eight meets in which she competed in 2002, including a 24th-place finish at the Colonial Athletic Association championships, and four meet individual titles. She competed at the indoor ECAC championships in 2002 and placed 19th in the mile and 20th in the 1,000 meters. During the outdoor season, she placed fourth in the 1,500 meters, fifth in 4 x 400 meter relay and ninth in the 800 meters at the CAA championships in Richmond. An outstanding student, she is also a Verizon CoSIDA Academic All-American nominee.
FIELD HOCKEY: Senior defender Kim Wagaman was a four-year standout on defense for Blue Hens, serving as a co-captain as a senior and leading the team to the league semifinals all four seasons. She started each of the final 61 games of her career over three seasons and finished with career totals of nine goals and 15 assists. She enjoyed an outstanding senior season, as she was the team's third leading scorer with three goals and nine assists. She was named second team National Field Hockey Coaches of America All-Region and first team All-Colonial Athletic Association, and earned a spot on the CAA All-Tournament team. An outstanding student, she also was selected as the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year for field hockey for 2002, was a three-time member of the College Field Hockey Coaches Association national All-Academic team and is a Verizon CoSIDA Academic All-American nominee. In addition to her team MVP award, Wagaman also was honored Wednesday with the ECAC Medal of Merit Award presented to the UD senior female letter winner with the highest grade point average. She carries a 3.91 grade point average as an accounting major with a minor in management information systems.
LACROSSE: Sophomore midfielder Erin Edell was a force for the Blue Hens, leading the team to a 7-9 record and a third-place finish in CAA regular season play. She started all 16 games, tied for the team lead with 24 goals and was third on the team with 24 total points. She also led the team with 29 groundballs, was tops on the team with 40 draw controls and was third on the team with 14 caused turnovers. She scored two or more goals nine times during the season and scored at least one goal in all but two games. For her efforts, she was named second team All-CAA.
ROWING: Senior Kylie Campbell served as team captain and was a key contributor as a member of the varsity heavyweight eights crew. She led the Blue Hens to their second straight unofficial CAA team title as well as a fourth-place finish at the Dad Vail Regatta and a fifth-place finish at the season-ending ECAC championships. She was a member of the varsity eights crew that posted three second-place finishes, at dual meets at Georgetown and Virginia and at the CAA Kerr Cup championships. The crew also advanced to the finals at the Murphy Cup and to the semifinals at Dad Vail, and finished 10th at the ECAC championships and at the Knecht Cup.
SOCCER: Junior forward/midfielder Caryn Blood led the Blue Hens to a 9-9-1 record and a berth in the CAA quarterfinals in 2002, when she was the team's leading scorer with 20 points on seven goals and six assists. She scored two goals each game in wins over Drexel University and Mt. St. Mary's College during the campaign. She also earned second team All-CAA honors and was selected to the Verizon CoSIDA District II All-Academic women's soccer team. An honor student as a sport management major, she will represent UD student-athletes at the annual NCAA Leadership Conference May 25-29 at Disney World in Orlando.
SOFTBALL: Junior shortstop Laura Streets enjoyed one of the finest seasons ever for a UD softball player as she led the Blue Hens to a 20-21-1 record and a spot in the CAA championship tournament. She led the team in virtually every offensive category as she batted .342, scored 23 runs, banged out 39 hitsincluding 10 doubles and eight home runsand knocked in 28 runs. She also led the squad with 75 total bases, a .658 slugging percentage and a .414 on-base percentage. During the spring she set UD school records for home runs in a season (8), home runs in a career (13) and longest hitting streak (14). Her 28 runs batted in were the most by a UD player since Lauren Mark had 31 in 2000. Streets was named to the CAA All-Tournament team.
SWIMMING AND DIVING: Junior Sarah Peffer had a huge impact in her first season with the Blue Hens after transferring from the University of Nebraska. She was nearly unbeatable in the freestyle distance events and in the 400 individual medley, leading the Blue Hens to a 7-4 dual meet record, a fourth-place finish at the CAA championships and a ninth-place finish at the ECAC regional meet. She became the first athlete in UD history to win multiple events at the CAA championship meet as she captured the 500 freestyle, 400 individual medley and 1,650 freestyle. She moved on to the ECAC regional meet at the University of Pittsburgh and earned All-East honors by placing fourth in the 800 freestyle relay, sixth in the 400 individual medley, sixth in the 500 freestyle and seventh in the 200 butterfly. She also set UD records in the 500 freestyle (4:58.26), the 400 individual medley (4:26.78) and the 800 freestyle relay (7:43.61).
TENNIS: Senior Jessica Wilkes was a four-year letter winner for the Blue Hens and capped her career by earning second team All-CAA honors in singles. She led the team to second-place finishes in the America East Conference in both 2000 and 2001 and to the quarterfinal round at the CAA championships each of the past two seasons. She was the team's No. 1 singles and doubles player this season, posting a singles record of 16-7, which included a nine-match win streak. The 16 victories were the most by a UD No. 1 player at singles since the 1997-98 season. She finished her career with a singles record of 51-31 to rank No. 6 all-time at UD. She is an honor student as an accounting major.
VOLLEYBALL: Sophomore middle hitter Valerie Murphy led the Blue Hens to a 9-20 record and a berth in the CAA quarterfinals for first-year head coach Bonnie Kenny during the 2002 campaign. Murphy was a standout on a young team, leading the squad with a .247 hitting percentage and in kills with 3.15 per game. She also ranked among the team leaders with 0.60 blocks per game and was tops on the team with 17 matches in which she reached double figures in kills, including a season-high 22 against Villanova University. An outstanding student, she was a Verizon CoSIDA Academic All-American nominee and a CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year nominee.
Other awards
Field hockey standout Kim Wagaman was presented the ECAC Medal of Merit Award as the UD senior female letter winner with the highest grade point index. An All-CAA defender, she carries a 3.91 grade point average as an accounting major.
University of Delaware Student Services for Athletes presented awards to senior softball standout Melissa Basilio and to senior basketball standout Allison Trapp. Basilio, a senior third baseman and team captain, received the Student Services for Athletes Special Contributor Award. She earned second team All-CAA honors in 2003 as she batted .258 with 15 runs batted in and set a school record for career defensive assists with 496. Trapp received the Dr. Janice Jordan Award for special academic achievement. Trapp was a first team All-CAA guard as she averaged 16.3 points per game and led the Blue Hens to a share of the CAA regular season title and a berth in the Women's National Invitation Tournament.
Sophomore cross country and track and field distance runner Tess Beinke earned the Miles Powell Jr. Engineering Scholarship presented to outstanding engineering students who are also varsity letter winners. Beinke, who received the award for the second straight year, competed in five meets for the UD cross country team and ran distance events for the UD indoor and outdoor track and field squads.
