Carolyn Wasilewski joins UD softball coaching staff

11:45 a.m., Jan. 21, 2003--University of Delaware softball head coach B.J. Ferguson has announced the hiring of former Blue Hen standout shortstop Carolyn Wasilewski as a volunteer assistant coach.

Wasilewski, a 2001 University of Delaware honors graduate, joins a staff that also includes first-year, full-time assistant coach Lisa Myers. Ferguson will enter her 23rd season as head coach in 2003. The Blue Hens will open the season Feb. 21-23 at the East Carolina Tournament in Greenville, N.C.

A native of Pottsville, Pa., Wasilewski earned her degree in exercise science and exercise physiology with a minor in biology and coaching science in 2001. She is currently pursuing a master's degree in exercise science and biomechanics at Delaware and expects to graduate this May.

A co-captain and four-year starter at shortstop under Ferguson, Wasilewski batted .257 with 10 runs batted in, 23 runs scored, and a team-high 17 sacrifice hits as a senior in 2001 for the Blue Hens, leading the squad to a 24-25 record.

She capped her career by setting University of Delaware career records for games played (186), games started (182) and assists (410). For her career, she collected 94 hits, scored 59 runs, knocked in 29 runs and had 32 sacrifice hits.

She twice was named to the Verizon All-District II Academic softball first team sponsored by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) in 2000 and 2001. She was a seven-time Dean's List student, was named to the America East Student-Athlete Academic Honor Roll four times, and was a member of Golden Key National Honor Society, Mortar Board and Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society.

While at Delaware, Wasilewski was active with the UD Student Athlete Advisory Council, was part of the HENS Mentoring program, was a volunteer with Special Olympics and was an instructor in various youth softball camps.

Since earning her undergraduate degree, Wasilewski has served as a research assistant and as a teaching assistant in biomechanics at the University of Delaware, as well as serving as a fitness specialist and intern with MBNA America.
