10:40 a.m., May 15, 2003--Jim Sherman, the University of Delawares third-year baseball head coach, gained his 100th Delaware victory as the Fightin Blue Hens defeated Rider 7-4 on Wednesday, May 14, at Bob Hannah Stadium.
Sherman, a former Blue Hen player, was named to the head coaching position in May 2000, after serving five seasons as an assistant coach under Hannah.
In Wednesdays win, freshman catcher Brian Valichka doubled in the game-winning run, which was part of a five-run eighth inning rally.
Senior Steve Harden picked up the win as he pitched two scoreless innings in relief, striking out five of the seven batters he faced.
Senior right-handed pitcher Jason Vincent made his final start at Delaware, and he went 5.0 innings, scattering 10 hits. He finishes third all-time in school history with 309.2 innings pitched, tied for seventh with 24 wins and eighth in strikeouts with 193.
Senior Doug Eitelman had two hits, including his ninth double of the season.
Delaware's win was its 20th of the season, marking the 31st straight season the baseball program has won 20 or more games.
Delaware (20-32) will visit Rutgers University at 3 p.m., Thursday, May 15, in its season finale.
