1:10 p.m., Jan. 17, 2003--Fifteen international scholars are on the UD campus during Winter Session as part of a month-long Fulbright American Studies Institute, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Study of the U.S. Branch.

The scholars come from a wide range of countries, including India, Mexico, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, New Zealand, South Africa, Russia, Ukraine, Finland, Spain, Sweden, the Czech Republic and Uruguay. They are visiting UD as guests of the Department of Political Science and International Relations and the Center for International Studies.

The Study of the U.S. Branch seeks to promote a better understanding of the United States among foreign students, teachers and scholars whose professional focus is American society and culture. The theme of the 2003 UD institute, one of nine taking place around the country, is “U.S. National Security: American Foreign Policy Formulation in an Age of Globalization.”

During the month of January, institute participants are taking part in a series of seminars and videoconferences led by UD faculty and faculty from other institutions on the themes of U.S. national security and foreign policy.

They also are visiting with numerous policy makers in Delaware, Washington, D.C., and New York and visiting the Department of Defense, the National Security Council, the Office of Counterterrorism at the U.S. Department of State, the National Intelligence Council, Dover Air Force Base, the Delaware Congressional delegation, the Delaware legislature, the U.S. Mission to the United Nations, the Delaware State Police and the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

The program concludes on Feb. 2. For more information, visit the institute web site at [http://international.udel.edu/projects/grants/fulbright.html] or contact the program directors: Bahram Rajaee at [Bahram@udel.edu] or Mark Miller at [mjmiller@udel.edu].
