Delaware rowers excel at Dad Vail, ECAC contests
 

10:30 a.m., May 12, 2003--The University of Delaware women's rowing team advanced two crews to the finals at the Dad Vail Regatta held May 9-10 on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.

The Fightin’ Blue Hens second varsity eights team of Nicole Lombardi, Elizabeth Harris, Lisa Hardy, Jess Colpo, Alison Conway, Andrea Placke, Janice Brown, Laura McDonald and Elizabeth McGarry placed second in the finals with a time of 7:02.0, narrowly falling to champion Boston College (7:00.4). West Virginia was third (7:00.1) followed by Drexel (7:08.45), and Saint Joseph's (7:18.6).

Delaware's lightweight varsity eights team also advanced to the finals and placed fifth overall with a time of 7:09.8. The team consisted of Carolyn Serey, Denise Burke, Dana Lohr, Laura Muto, Emily McElwain, Stef Lazorick, Tory Yanakos, Lyra Sawzin and Susan Carbine. Bucknell won with a time of 6:57.1 followed by Purdue (7:03.1), Central Florida (7:04.6), and Georgia Tech (7:07.0).

Also for the Hens, the varsity eights team was eliminated in the semifinals with a fifth place finish, the novice eights was eliminated in the semifinals with a fifth place finish, the novice fours was third in its heat and did not advance and the varsity fours was fifth in its heat and did not advance.

The varsity heavyweights eights team of Alli Garwood, Megan Batykefer, Elizabeth McInturff, Kylie Campbell, Betsy Ferry, Danah O'Connor, Lissa Kutz, Dawn Hussnatter and Leanna Ferrand posted a time of 7:14.7 to place fifth. Boston College won the semifinal heat with a time of 6:54.3, followed by San Diego, Drake, Santa Clara, Delaware and Connecticut. Massachusetts went on to win the finals.

The novice eights team of Sarah Mazurkevich, Jenna Darrenkamp, Leslie Forsyth, Katherine Reiner, Val Schuster, Cindy Dudzinski, Kate Sianni, Lane Kohl and Becca Bauer rowed to a time of 7:24.8 to place fifth in the semifinals. Connecticut won the semifinals with a time of 7:07.2, followed by Bucknell, Georgia, West Virginia and Delaware. Purdue went on to win the finals.

The novice fours crew of Jamie Hartnett, Jamie Schoeonwald, Jessica Kostick, Courtney Maggiulli and Cathy Savarese placed third in its heat with a time of 8:14.9. Bowdoin won the heat in a time of 8:02.5 followed by Johns Hopkins, Delaware and Duquesne. Tennessee-Chattanooga went on to win the finals.

The varsity fours team of Kat Campagnini, Nicole Ferrari, Jen Suminski, Maureen Gillen and Liz Florin rowed to a time of 8:23.9 to place fifth in its heat. Marquette won the heat in 7:46.1, followed by Dowling, Stony Brook, and Georgia Tech. Bowdoin went on to win the finals.

UD rowers returned to action Sunday, May 11, competing in the Eastern College Athletic Association championships on the Cooper River in New Jersey.

The varsity fours team of Carolyn Serey, Denise Burke, Dana Lohr, Laura Muto and Emily McElwain won first place. They rowed to a time of 8:06.8 to outdistance Massachusetts (8:09.4). Buffalo was third, followed by Rhode Island, St, Joseph's and Villanova.

The second eights squad of Nicole Lombardi, Elizabeth Harris, Lisa Hardy, Jess Colpo, Alison Conway, Andrea Placke, Janice Brown, Laura McDonald and Elizabeth McGarry placed second overall with a time of 7:19.2, falling to champion Massachusetts. West Virginia was third, followed by Buffalo, Rhode Island and Colgate.

The novice eights crew of Sarah Mazurkevich, Jenna Darrenkamp, Leslie Forsyth, Katherine Reiner, Val Schuster, Cindy Dudzinski, Kate Sianni, Lane Kohl and Becca Bauer placed fifth with a time of 7:34.8. St. Joseph's won the race in a time of 7:11.4, followed by Villanova, Colgate, Massachusetts, Delaware and West Virginia.

The varsity heavyweight eights was the only UD squad that did not advance to the finals. Delaware's team of Alli Garwood, Megan Batykefer, Elizabeth McInturff, Kylie Campbell, Betsy Ferry, Danah O'Connor, Lissa Kutz, Dawn Hussnatter and Leanna Ferrand placed fourth in the Petite final to place 10th overall. Army won the Petite final with a time of 7:13.3 to earn a seventh place finish. St. Joseph's was eighth, followed by Colgate and Delaware.

The Hens will close out the 2003 season May 30-June 1 at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships at Camden, N.J.
