4:30 p.m., June 30, 2003--University of Delaware football standout Joe Minucci has signed a free agent contract with the New York Jets, it was announced Monday.
Minucci, a defensive lineman who was named first team All-Atlantic 10 Football Conference last season, will join the Jets when they open pre-season camp in mid-July at Hofstra University.
Minucci, a native of Lindenhurst, N.Y., and a graduate of St. Anthonys High School, started all 12 games for the 2002 Fightin Blue Hens. He had 38 tackles, nine for losses, and was second on the team with four quarterback sacks and six pass break-ups.
A four-year letter winner, Minucci appeared in 33 games during his UD career and started 27 of those games. In all, he recorded 99 tackles, including eight quarterback sacks.
He was a key member of Delawares 2000 team that advanced to the NCAA Division I-AA championship tournament semifinals.
Minucci will be one of five former UD football players in NFL camps this summer. He will be joined by Oakland Raiders quarterback and 2002 NFL Most Valuable Player Rich Gannon, second-year wide receiver Jamin Elliott of the Chicago Bears, rookie defensive end Mike Cecere of the Washington Redskins and rookie defensive back Keith Burnell of the Green Bay Packers.
