Men's basketball shares first place in conference

9:35 a.m., Jan. 9, 2003--After its second straight Colonial Athletic Association road win, the University of Delaware men’s basketball team has a share of first place in the highly competitive conference as it prepares to host Virginia Commonwealth University at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

David Lunn won the game for the Hens by sinking two free throws with 4.3 seconds left
The Fightin’ Blue Hens defeated the College of William & Mary 74-72 on Wednesday night in Williamsburg, Va., and improved to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in CAA.

The conference mark leaves the Hens tied with four other teams, including VCU, for the CAA lead in early season action.

Tickets to Saturday’s CAA contest against Virginia Commonwealth cost $5 to $12 and are available at the UD box offices at the Bob Carpenter Center and the Trabant University Center, and through TicketMaster at (302) 984-2000 or online at [www.ticketmaster.com].

In Wednesday’s win, sophomore guard David Lunn sank two free throws with just 4.3 seconds left to play to lift UD to victory.

The Hens, playing their sixth straight road game, got 15 points and eight rebounds from Maurice Sessoms. Mike Ames added 13 points, including two big three-pointers in the final three minutes, as the Hens rallied from an eight-point second half deficit.

UD has matched last year's conference road win total of two and has posted consecutive league road wins for the first time since downing Northeastern and Boston University while members of the America East Conference in February 2001.

William & Mary (5-5, 1-1 CAA), which had a five-game winning streak snapped, got a game-high 21 points from forward Adam Hess and 18 more off the bench from freshman Jack Jenkins.

“I can't say enough about how tough this league is,” Delaware Head Coach David Henderson said. “We played a very good team tonight and we were fortunate to come out with a win. Fortunately, the ball fell our way at the end. Mike Ames hit some big three-pointers, David Lunn hit those tough free throws at the end, and Maurice Sessoms came up big tonight. We need those types of things to happen in order to win in this league.”
