UD's Van Note homers twice in loss to Temple

11:55 a.m., April 24, 2003--The University of Delaware’s Steve Van Note hit two home runs and drove in five runs but it was not enough as the Fightin’ Blue Hens fell 8-7 to Temple University on Wednesday, April 23, at Bob Hannah Stadium.

Delaware (14-25) will now prepare to host Virginia Commonwealth University in a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series beginning Friday, April 25, at Bob Hannah Stadium. The teams will meet at 3 p.m., Friday, and at 1 p.m., Saturday, April 26, and Sunday, April 27.

In Wednesday’s loss, Van Note staked the Blue Hens to a 2-0 lead when he crushed a homer in the second inning and he extended the lead to 3-0 in the third when he drove home senior first baseman Steve Harden with a single.

Temple’s John Quigley smacked a two-run homer as part of a five-run fifth inning to give the Owls a 7-3 lead but Van Note answered with a two-run homer to cut the deficit to 7-5.

Quigley hit a solo shot in the seventh that proved to be the game-winner as UD scored twice in the bottom half of the inning.

Van Note finished the day 4-for-5 with three runs scored and five runs batted in. Senior designated hitter Nick DeCarlo went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
