Laura Barron named a finalist in 'Best Gig' contest

9:45 a.m., May 13, 2003--May 2003 will be a memorable month for senior communication major Laura Barron. In addition to finals and the end-of-year activities culminating in Commencement, Barron is one of the five finalists from 1,500 wannabe traffic reporters who entered Philadelphia’s WCAU-TV’s “The Best Summer Gig Ever!” contest.

Her traffic reporting on May 5 as one of 10 semifinalists won her a finalist spot in the contest, which is based on viewer voting on NBC10.com.

The TV station called her with the news Saturday evening, as she, her sorority sisters from Alpha Phi and their dates were preparing to leave for a formal dance. “I was really excited and so were my friends,” she said, “but now I’m trying to put it out of my mind until the time comes and just do the best I can.”

For the final phase of the competition, Barron will be doing traffic reports from 6-7 a.m. and from 4-5 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14.

Voting begins at 6 p.m., Friday, May 16, and ends at 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 20, at [www.nbc10.com]. The winner becomes an NBC 10 traffic reporter through August.
