For several years, WVUD, the campus radio station at 91.3 on the FM dial, has provided background audio for Comcast Cables Channel 66. In December, UDs radio station moved to a new cable home on Channel 5.
Chuck Tarver, assistant director of the student center, said he thinks the new cable channel has been beneficial to the radio station.
Now that we are on a channel that is listened to so often, a lot of people are noticing us and we are getting more attention, he said.
Senior Rob Gregory, WVUD sports director, said this change will give the radio station more exposure since additional Comcast subscribers are now able to tune in. He said approximately 35,000 more listeners now have access to WVUD since it moved to the lower channel.
For those people who did not know we were out there, this is our chance to show them we are no typical radio station, Gregory said. We have a wide variety of music that ranges from country, jazz and classical to heavy metal.
In addition to music, the station airs sports and public affairs shows, he said. Other popular and innovative programs include The Cutting Edge, which features new college bands, and Radio Uno, a bilingual show focusing on Latin music.
The staff of WVUD is made up of student and community volunteers, as well as three University staff members, Gregory said.
It is great working with community members and students. Being on Comcast, he said, is especially beneficial because it will allow new community members who are interested to join the team.
Most radio stations have four or five disc jockeys, Gregory said, but WVUD has between 60 and 100. There is a different DJ every day to give everyone a chance to play an important role for the station and to offer diverse entertainment to the public.
