Sept. 12 lecture explores World Trade Center rebuilding options

Sept. 11, 2002--As America observes the first anniversary of the events of Sept. 11, 2001, a heated debate centers on how to proceed with the rebuilding of the World Trade Center area. That issue will be the focus of ”Next Steps, Hard Choices: Rebuilding the World Trade Center,” a lecture by Craig Whitaker, of Craig Whitaker Architects and New York University, from 12:15-2 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 12, in 187 Graham Hall. The presentation is the first in a fall lecture series sponsored by the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy.

Whitaker is coauthor of “Next Steps, Hard Choices: A Proposal for Lower Manhattan,” a study identifying and assessing the opportunities and problems in planning for the rebuilding of the World Trade Center area. A consultant on major public works projects in New York, Whitaker has published extensively on architectural and design policy issues.

Other lectures in the series include:

  • "Globalization and its Impact on Cities," Peter Marcuse, Columbia University, Sept. 26;

  • "There's No Place Like Home? Subtle Barriers to Job Searches in Detroit and Oakland," Susan Turner Meiklejohn, Hunter College, City University of New York, Oct. 10;

  • "Competitive Advantage for the 21st-Century City," Ed Blakely, New School University, Oct. 31;

  • "Entropic Zones: Buildings of the Contemporary City," with James M. Dickinson, Rider University, Nov. 14;

  • "Welfare Reform 2002: Who Benefits? Who Loses?" with Mimi Abramovitz, Hunter College, Nov. 21; and

  • "Code of the Street," with Elijah Anderson, University of Pennsylvania, Dec. 5.

The free public lectures are held on selected Thursdays, from 12:15-2 p.m., in 187 Graham Hall. For more information, call (302) 831-1686.
