Aug. 28, 2002--University of Delaware football fans, faculty, students and alumni will honor UDs legendary coach Tubby Raymond tonight at the 2002 season opening game at Delaware Stadium.
Raymond retired in February, having compiled a career record of 300-118-3. He is one of just nine coaches in the history of college football to have won 300 games, and one of just four who accomplished that feat at one institution.
Tubby Raymond Day celebrations will include a reception before the game at the home of UD President David P. Roselle, where U.S. Sen. Joe Biden and U.S. Rep. Michael Castle will help recognize Raymonds long and distinguished career.
Raymond has been honored with citations from the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives, a proclamation from Delaware Gov. Ruth Ann Minner and tributes from the Delaware House of Representatives and State Senate, as well as a letter from President George W. Bush. At the reception, Biden will present Raymond with the Senate citation, and Castle will give him a flag flown over the U.S. Capitol.
After the reception, Raymond will meet with former players in the Carpenter Club at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center. Raymond will officially hand over the ball to new head football coach K.C. Keeler just before kick off at 7 p.m.
The celebration will continue at tonights game when the Fightin Blue Hens meet Georgia Southern. The Blue Hens start the season ranked No. 22 in The Sports Network's Pre-season Top 25. Georgia Southern ranked No. 5 in the poll.
During halftime, the field in Delaware Stadium will be officially renamed in Raymonds honor and participants will include the captains of his teams from 1966 to 2001. Raymond will be featured in the game program, and the first 5,000 fans will receive free posters with photos of Raymond and career highlights.
Tickets for tonights game are still available. You can buy tickets in person at the Bob Carpenter Center Box Office, by phone from TicketMaster at 302-984-2000, or on the Internet at www.ticketmaster.com.
