Drought takes its toll: No grills during tailgating

Aug. 22, 2002--Because of the drought and dry conditions around the David M. Nelson Athletic Complex, the University of Delaware is prohibiting the use of grills at tailgates.

The ban, which will begin with the football season opener on Thursday night, Aug. 29, against Georgia Southern, will include both gas and charcoal grills and is in effect for all parking areas around Delaware Stadium and the athletic complex. The ban will remain in effect until the statewide drought restrictions are eased.

"The ban is necessary in light of the drought that we are currently in," UD Director of Athletics Edgar N. Johnson said. "We are in a situation similar to 1999 when we asked our fans not to use grills as a part of their tailgate festivities. Tailgating at University of Delaware football games is part of our tradition and something that our fans enjoy. However, because of the severity of the drought and the dry conditions in and around the athletic complex, we know that our fans will understand the safety concern that is involved. We are hoping that the drought restrictions end soon so that the ban can be lifted."
In addition, the University reminded fans that general parking rates have been raised to $10 this season.
