Newark recognizes student volunteers
 

May 23, 2002--The 2002 Town & Gown Awards Ceremony for Community Service, held May 6 by the city of Newark in the Municipal Building, honored 32 outstanding UD students who volunteered their talents to help community members and organizations throughout the year.

Honorees

Barbara Tuday, a sophomore mechanical engineering major from Bear and Nick Nykorczuk, a junior biomechanical engineer from West Deptford, N.J., were recognized by H.O.S.T.S Shue-Medill School.

Newark Mayor Hal Godwin with UD student volunteer Melissa Blauvelt during the Town and Gown awards ceremony May 6 at the city Municipal Building.

Jacqueline Swierzbinski, a junior early childhood education major from Wyoming; Marisa Erdman, a senior business major from Millsboro; Emily Udvardy, a sophomore fine arts major from Jefferson, Md.; Ann Bailey, a family and community studies major from Emmaus, Pa.; and sophomore Emily Quinlan of Morgantown, W.Va., were cited by Homeward Bound.

Melissa Blauvelt, a junior family and community services major from Phoenix, Md.; Jennifer Berry, a junior English major from Wilmington; and Lauren Coker, a sophomore business major from Allentown, Pa., were recognized by Newark Manor Retirement Home.

Kate McLaughlin, a senior exercise physiology major from Stewartstown, Pa.; and Laura Spranklin, a senior biology major from Dover, were both cited by Promoters of Wellness.

Tricia Baker, a senior psychology major from Dillsburg, Pa.; Lauren Miller, a senior human services, education and public policy major from Hatfield, Pa.; and John Michael Ryan from Newark, worked with Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Delaware.

Laura Evans, a sophomore psychology and English major from Lancaster, Pa., also was recognized by Big Brothers/Big Sisters, as well as Contact Delaware and University Mentors.

Angela Caswell, a junior biology and premed studies major from Lewes; and Megan Guinan, a junior accounting major from Wilmington, were cited by Planned Parenthood.

Lindsay Amper, a junior from Cranston, R.I., was recognized for her work with Adopt-a-Family, the AIDS Walk, the Sept. 11 Memorial Ribbon Garden, the canned food drive for firefighters support and for raising money for the Red Cross and Kidney Foundation.

Rebecca Bledso, a sophomore English and drama major from Newark, was recognized for her creative mentoring at Cedar Lane Elementary School.

Charles Collins-Chase, a junior engineering major from Minneapolis, helped establish the Alpha Lambda Delta Student Advisory Board to expand programs. He also organized a dance at Little Sisters of the Poor and a benefit concert for an orphanage and a hospital.

Susannah Conner, a senior fine arts major from Plymouth Meeting, Pa., was cited for her work as art instructor, tutor and mentor with the Delaware Youth for Christ at Newark Day Nursery.

Michelle Eichinger, who is currently studying to receive her master’s degree, was recognized for her for her work with the Northern Delaware Early Head Start Program.

David Fatherree, a junior psychology and biology major from Carlisle, Pa., was cited for his work with the New York City Ground-Zero Firefighters’ Thank You America Tour, which raised money for a school playground.

Wendy Garcia, a freshman from Washington Heights, N.Y., was recognized for her work as president of the Youth Empowerment Task Force associated with HOLA.

John Heiss, a senior biochemistry major from Honeoye Falls, N.Y., worked with UD’s Spirit Ambassadors and raised money for the Children’s Miracle Fund and the March of Dimes.

Andrea Koval, a sophomore psychology and art major from Tuckerton, N.J., was cited by the Delaware Psychiatric Center.

Jessica Mattera, a junior biology major from Oceanside, N.Y., was honored for developing a community service program for A.I. DuPont Children’s Hospital.

Megan Maguire, a senior education major from Wilmington, was honored for work with the Girl Scouts of America Chesapeake Bay Council.

Branwen McNabb, a sophomore criminal justice major from Bryn Mawr, Pa., was recognized by Read-Aloud Delaware.

James Sarakatsannis, a junior biochemistry major from Cincinnati, established a student advisory board at Alpha Lambda Delta to increase service and to make it a resident student organization. He was a tutor at the College School and the Newark Senior Center and organized a concert to benefit a hospital and an orphanage. Sarakatsannis also organized a Chapel Street clean-up and a dance at the Little Sisters of the Poor.

Simone Wexler, a junior human services, education and public policy major from Southhamptown, Pa., was cited by Girls Inc.

Erin Woodring, a freshman nursing major from Middletown, was honored for volunteering with Christiana Care and Special Olympics.
