Spirit Ambassadors work to boost school spirit and encourage active participation at the University. They act as a voice for the University community through their connections with other student groups and organizations on campus. In addition, Spirit Ambassadors foster connections between alumni and students, both by interacting with current alumni and by encouraging students to consider their role as future alumni. The ambassadors also serve as an advisory board, helping senior administrators stay in touch with student concerns.
The group was selected through a competitive process. Thirty-seven students submitted applications, and only 12 were named as Spirit Ambassadors.
The selection process began with an application that asked prospective Spirit Ambassadors for biographical information, responses to two essays, and a letter of recommendation from a member of the University community. The Selection Committeewhich included Chris Elliott, Residence Life and Spirit Ambassador alumnus; Kathryn Goldman, Judicial Affairs; Sandy Jenkins Hargrove, Student Centers; Joe Mackley, Recreation Services; Thorpe Moeckel, UD Alumni Association; Christine Schultz, Alumni Relations; and Robert Snyder, University Relationsthen reviewed the applications to determine the finalists.
The entire University community, including students, faculty and staff, were invited to participate in a web poll to offer their feedback on the finalists. While participation in the polling varies from year to year, this year more than 1,500 people (90 percent students) participated.
The Selection Committee considered the poll results along with other factors in their final selections of Spirit Ambassadors. The finalists also met with the Selection Committee, President and Mrs. David Roselle, Robert Davis, vice president for development and alumni relations, and current Spirit Ambassadors.
All new and current Spirit Ambassadors are eligible for consideration for the T. Muncy Keith Spirit Award, a $1,000 scholarship presented annually by the UD Alumni Association to the Spirit Ambassador who has made, or has the potential to make, the greatest contributions to the group. This year's award was presented to Sarah Lyman (HP '03) during halftime ceremonies at the Homecoming football game on Saturday, Oct. 12.
