Special Olympics sets Summer Games June 7-8

Special Olympics Delaware will hold its 2002 Summer Games Friday and Saturday, June 7-8, on the University of Delaware campus.

The games will involve more than 1,100 athletes, 350 coaches and 1,500 volunteers from throughout the state.

Formal opening ceremonies will be held at 7:30 p.m., Friday, at Delaware Stadium. There will be a parade of athletes, the conclusion of the Law Enforcement Torch Run and a fireworks display. More than 500 law enforcement officers will have participated in the 160-mile torch relay.

Competition will begin at 10 a.m., Friday, at the David M. Nelson Athletic Complex, with events at the UD Outdoor Pool, the Delaware Field House, the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center, the track and various playing fields.

Special Olympians will participate in aquatics, track and field, basketball, bocce, bowling, cycling, golf, powerlifting, long distance running, roller skating, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball.

The games will conclude at 4 p.m., Sunday.
