Laura Streets named to All-East softball team

June 11, 2002--UD sophomore softball player Laura Streets has been named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) All-East honorable mention team.

Streets, a sophomore second baseman from Newark, was one of 34 players honored on the three teams. The teams are selected from a vote of head coaches from ECAC member schools at the NCAA Division I level. The ECAC includes schools from Maine to North Carolina.

Streets, who in May earned first team All-Colonial Athletic Association honors, was among the Blue Hen leaders in nearly every offensive category this season. She started 45 games and ranked second on the squad with a .350 batting average. She also banged out 48 hits, scored 17 runs, knocked in a team-leading 23 runs, hit two home runs and tied for the team lead with 12 doubles.

She batted .310 with 21 runs batted in as a freshman in 2001.

Delaware posted a record of 19-27 and placed third in the CAA standings, with a 5-9 record as a first-year member of the league under head coach B.J. Ferguson this past spring.

The ECAC first team was led by senior pitcher Kristen Dennis of the University of Virginia, who was named the ECAC Player of the Year. Also on the first team were pitcher Kaila Holtz of Massachusetts, catcher Laura Taylor of Seton Hall, first baseman Jill Iacono of Canisius, second basemen Ashley Bakken of Massachusetts and Sara Carlson of Villanova, shortstop Cara Blumfield of Boston College, third baseman Jesseka Bartholomew of Yale, utility player Tiffany Whitton of Harvard, designated player Alex Richardson of St. Franci, and outfielders Ellen Sarosy of Fairfield, Nicki Robbins of Army and Lisa Boone of UMBC.

On the second team were pitchers Mellissa Santos of Fairfield and Robyn Horrick of Boston University, catcher Marsha Kelley of St. Peter's, first baseman Kristin Del Calvo of Princeton, second baseman Karyn Kennedy of Fairfield, third baseman Elissa Connell of Monmouth, shortstop Deanna Vecchio of UMBC, utility player Jamie Gorczynski of Canisius, designated players Margaret Yerdon of Binghamton and Caitlyn Thistle of Colgate and outfielders Tanya Rose of Syracuse, Becki Murphy of Canisius and Deanna Dovak of Rider.

The honorable mention team consisted of Streets, pitcher Brie Galicinao of Princeton, first baseman Brooke Keiper of St. Francis, third baseman Scooter Wheeler of Massachusetts, shortstop Jamie Haas of Boston University and outfielders Jenny Bender of Lehigh University and Rosette Rough of Long Island University.
