Packers promote UD grad Slowik

Bob Slowik, a University of Delaware graduate and former Fightin' Blue Hen player, has been promoted to the position of assistant head coach of the NFL's Green Bay Packers, it was announced recently by Mike Sherman, Green Bay general manager and head coach.

Slowik has been defensive backfield coach for the Green Bay Packers since 2000 and is a 25-year veteran of the coaching profession.

Slowik, in his 11th year of coaching in the NFL, brings to his new role seven years of experience as a defensive coordinator-six with the Chicago Bears (1993-98) and one with the Cleveland Browns (1999), the latter immediately prior to joining the Sherman staff in 2000.

In commenting on the Slowik promotion, Sherman said, "Ever since I was officially named GM and executive vice president and my duties were expanded to a much broader scope, I have felt the need for someone to assist me with issues relating to the team and football as they come up during the year. Because of this I felt a need to name an assistant head coach, a position many other teams have but one I have not entertained until now. Therefore I am naming Bob Slowik assistant head coach of the Green Bay Packers. Bob's tremendous work ethic, experiences, his people skills and his ability to see the big picture are the attributes I feel I can tap into."

During Slowik's tenure as Chicago defensive coordinator, the Bears' defense finished in the NFL's top half five of his six seasons. In addition to his duties as defensive coordinator, he coached the Chicago secondary during his first three years and presided over the linebackers in his final three seasons.

Slowik had joined the Bears after spending the 1992 season, his first in the NFL, with the Dallas Cowboys as a defensive assistant. The Cowboys finished 16-3 and won Super Bowl XXVII.

The 48-year-old Slowik began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, the University of Delaware, where he had been a two-year starter at cornerback, in 1977.

He later coached at the University of Florida (1979-82), Drake (1983), Rutgers (1984-89) and East Carolina (1990-91) before entering the professional ranks with the Cowboys in 1992.

Slowik, a Pittsburgh native, is the first Packers coaching aide to hold the position of assistant head coach since 1979, when Dave Hanner closed out a five-year tenure in that role.

Bob and his wife, Carol, a two-time All-America track competitor, have four children.
