Relay for Life raises $37,000 to fight cancer

On April 19- 20, the University of Delaware hosted the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, at the Delaware Field House, raising $37,000 to fight cancer.

In all, 33 teams participated, with approximately 15 members per team and a grand total of more than 500 participants.

Seventeen cancer survivors were on hand at the event, which also included UD students, alumni and faculty.

Relay for Life is designed to celebrate survivorship and generate awareness about cancer. The money raised supports education, research advocacy and patient services.

The event started Friday, April 19, and continued throughout the night into Saturday, April 20, as volunteers participated in a relay around the indoor track.

Lined around the track were 200 luminaria bags containing candles, which were lit in memory of individuals who have lost the battle with cancer or in honor of persons who are battling the disease.

Teams were judged in a number of categories, including team spirit and most involved team.
