No. 5 seed Georgetown University (11-2) will take on Manhattan (10-5) and No. 7 seed Duke (7-6) will square off against Hobart (6-7) in NCAA Division I men's lacrosse first round tournament games Sunday, May 12, at Delaware Stadium.
The complete pairings for the tournament were announced Sunday afternoon by the NCAA. Six automatic qualifiers (conference champions) and six at-large berths made up the 12-team field.
Other first round games will be held Saturday, May 11, at Brown University in Providence, R.I., with quarterfinal games set for May 18 at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., and May 19 at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
The semifinals and finals will be held May 25-27 at Rutgers University in Piscataway, N.J.
Georgetown, which earned the No. 5 seed as an at-large team, will open the tournament at noon against Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion Manhattan. The second game will follow at 3 p.m. (or 45 minutes after the completion of the first game), with Atlantic Coast Conference champion Duke, the No. 7 seed, taking on Patriot League titlist Hobart. Duke qualified for the tournament with an at-large berth.
Delaware will be hosting NCAA men's lacrosse tournament action for the first time since 1986 when the 22,000-seat Delaware Stadium served as host of the national semifinals and finals. North Carolina defeated Virginia 10-9 in overtime in the title game. Delaware also hosted the 1984 championship game in which Johns Hopkins defeated Syracuse 13-10.
Tickets, which include admission to both games, are $8 for adults and $5 for students and children. All seating will be general admission on the west side of the stadium (opposite team benches).
Tickets are available via Ticketmaster (984-2000), at the Bob Carpenter Center box office, and at the Delaware Stadium ticket booth the day of the game. Ticket booths will open Sunday at 10 a.m. and the gates will open at 10:30 a.m. There will be a $5 charge for parking. Lots will open at 9 a.m.
In other first round games at Brown, No. 6 Cornell (10-3) will take on America East champion Stony Brook (10-6) and No. 8 Massachusetts (11-3), the ECAC champion, will take on Great Midwest Lacrosse League champion Fairfield (7-5).
The top four seeds, No. 1 Johns Hopkins (11-1) , No. 2 Syracuse (12-2), No. 3 Virginia (10-3), and No. 4 Princeton (8-4), the Ivy League champion, all earned first round byes.
