UD men's basketball team to face Penn Quakers Dec. 3

10:25 a.m., Dec. 2, 2002--The University of Delaware men’s basketball team will battle traditional power Penn at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 3, in the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center.

Penn was defeated 71-62 on Nov. 25 by Drexel University, like UD a member of the Colonial Athletic Association.

Ryan Iversen
UD is coming off an impressive 87-58 victory over Long Island University Sunday afternoon, Dec. 1, at the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center. In that game, senior guard Ryan Iversen recorded just the second triple double in Delaware history with 12 points, 17 rebounds and 11 assists.

The Blue Hens (1-1) broke open a close game early in the second half to keep the Blackbirds winless on the season at 0-4. Long Island got 16 points from forward JaJa Bey and nine points and nine assists from guard Antawn Dobie.

Iversen came off the bench to enjoy the best game of his career, accomplishing the rare feat in just 29 minutes of action. He became the first UD player to record a triple double since guard Keith Davis had 17 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against Washington College on Dec. 20, 1996. He reached the milestone when he fed sophomore forward Calvin Smith for a dunk with 5:14 left.

The Blue Hens, who recorded 29 assists and nine blocks with just eight turnovers, received a balanced effort as senior forward Maurice Sessoms came off the bench to score a game-high 19 points, Smith added career-highs of 16 points and seven blocks and junior guard Mike Ames added 11 points.

Long Island opened the game with a 7-0 lead, holding Delaware scoreless for the first four minutes and 32 seconds of the contest. But Delaware fired back with runs of 14-0 and 13-0 and took a 41-32 lead into halftime.

Delaware led by just eight points with 15:01 left to play when Long Island's Dobie scored a layup to cut the lead to 52-44. But the Blue Hens moved away with a 20-4 run over the next eight minutes to go up 72-48 with 7:03 left. Iversen accounted for the final seven points of the run to put the game away.

The Blue Hens won for the 46th straight time at home when scoring 70 or more points. The 87 points were the most by a Delaware team since scoring 89 in a 97-89 loss at Drexel last Feb. 9.

After the contest with Penn, UD’s next game will be at 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 9, at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia.
