Blue Rocks honor Raymond, Hannah

June 11, 2002--Former University of Delaware head football coach Harold R. “Tubby” Raymond and former UD head baseball coach Bob Hannah have been named the honorary captains for the 2002 MBNA America Carolina-California League All-Star Game on Tuesday, June 18, according to the Wilmington Blue Rocks.

Raymond, 75, retired from the University of Delaware on Feb. 18, 2002, after a 36-year tenure as head football coach. During his career as UD head coach, the Flint, Mich., native compiled a record of 300-119-3, which included small college national championships in 1971, 1972 and 1979.

Before his coaching career, Raymond played minor league baseball for two seasons.

He joined the football staff at Delaware in 1954 and served as backfield coach under Dave Nelson until 1966, when he replaced Nelson as head coach.

Raymond also was head coach of the UD baseball team from 1956-64, before handing the program over to Hannah. Recently, the University of Delaware Board of Trustees voted to honor Raymond by naming the Delaware Stadium playing surface Tubby Raymond Field. A dedication ceremony will be held Aug. 29, when the Fightin' Blue Hens take on Georgia Southern.

Hannah, 70, completed his 36-year stint as University of Delaware baseball coach following the 2000 season, finishing his career with a record of 1,053-464-6. The Trenton, N.J., native coached Blue Hen teams to 21 NCAA Regional appearances and one College World Series appearance, in 1970.

In 1991, Hannah was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and was a charter member of the Delaware Baseball Hall of Fame in 1994. On April 13, 2002, the University of Delaware and the Blue Hen Baseball Club jointly dedicated the former Delaware Diamond as Bob Hannah Stadium. Hannah is also a member of the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame.

“We regard this All-Star Game as a premiere, one-of-a-kind event in Delaware,” Chris Kemple, Blue Rocks general manager, said. “What better stage to pay tribute to arguably the two most prominent sports figures ever in Delaware?”

Both Raymond and Hannah will open the pre-game festivities with a first pitch as they will be honored on the field.

The Blue Rocks celebrate their 10th anniversary all season long in 2002. Wilmington hosts the 2002 Carolina-California All-Star Game on June 18. The Rocks return home to close out the first-half with a four-game series against Winston-Salem at Frawley from June 13-16.
