June 25, 2002--UD mens track and field standout thrower Mike Goodhart has been named to the Verizon/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Mens Track and Field/Cross Country second team Academic All-America team.
Goodhart, who was named to the Verizon/CoSIDA All-District II academic first team earlier in June, was one of just 45 mens track and field student-athletes from the entire nation in NCAA Division I to earn All-American honors.
Goodhart, a hammer throw specialist from Lititz, Pa., is the first Blue Hen student-athlete to earn Verizon/CoSIDA Academic All-America honors since football standout Brett Veach earned second team honors for football in 2001. The last UD track and field athlete to earn Academic All-America honors was distance runner Dave Geesaman, who was named to the national second team in 1999.
A four-year letter winner, Goodhart capped an outstanding career this spring by winning the hammer event at four different meets and by placing third in the hammer at the Colonial Athletic Association championships in April in Richmond, Va. He also placed 14th in the discus at the CAA meet and closed his career by placing 15th in the hammer at the IC4A regional championships at Princeton. Goodhart also competed at the prestigious Penn Relays in April, placing 18th in the hammer throw.
A business major who graduated in May from Delaware with a 3.958 grade point index as an operations management major with a minor in information management systems, he earned the Universitys ECAC Medal of Merit earlier this month for having the highest grade point index among male Blue Hen athletic letter winners.
A team co-captain, Goodhart is a Deans List student and a member of the UD Athletics Governing Board. He led Delaware to the 2000 America East outdoor track and field title when he placed fifth in the discus and sixth in the hammer and in 2001 placed fourth in the hammer and fifth in the discus at the America East outdoor championships. His career best throw of 180-3 in the hammer ranks second all-time in UD history.
Leading the Academic All-America first team were Adam Bergquist and Billy Pappas of Oregon, Patrick Brooks of Lamar, Balazs Csillag of Northern Iowa, John Friedman of Harvard, Christian Goy of Illinois State, Todd Grunander of Weber State, Troy Henderson of Alabama, Thomas Hocker of Yale, Teren Jamison of Utah, Daniel Lincoln of Arkansas, Roman Oravec of Southern Methodist, Zach Riley of Ball State, Scott Russell of Kansas, and David Scott of Lipscomb.
The second team consisted of Goodhart, Dan Conti of Holy Cross, James Adam Davis of Rice, Mike Deibler of Connecticut, Olivier Deigni of Georgia Tech, Dan Gibson of Davidson, John Hedengren of Brigham Young, Zach Jones of Montana State, Nickie Peters of Coppin State, Brian Rohrer of Alabama, Kyle Rowley of Southern Utah, Ryan Shay and Luke Watson of Notre Dame, Jeremy Tolman of Weber State and Kyle Wyatt of Nebraska.
