Keith Griesbaum

University of Delaware football junior wide receiver Keith Griesbaum will be out of action for the remainder of spring practice after tearing his Achilles tendon during the morning practice session Saturday, April 13.
Griesbaum, a 5-11, 190-pound junior from Pottsville, Pa., was injured during a non-contact drill while running a passing route. He underwent successful surgery Monday morning at Christiana Hospital. He will miss the final three weeks of spring drills and his status for the start of pre-season drills in August will be determined during the summer.
A third-year team member, Griesbaum earned his first varsity letter in 2001 when he appeared in four games in a reserve role but did not catch a pass. His role is expected to increase this fall under new head coach K.C. Keeler, who has instituted a no-huddle, spread offense that often uses three wide receivers.
"It's really a disappointing thing because Keith was playing extremely well this spring," said Keeler. "We feel that Keith is someone who can really benefit from this offense. We know he is the kind of person who will hard to get back and we hope he will be ready in the fall."
One of the team's fastest players, Griesbaum was a four-year starter at wide receiver at Pottsville High School where he was a two-time all-county selection and caught 38 passes for 727 yards and seven touchdowns. He was the Anthracite Conference Defensive Back of the Year as a senior. In track, he set school records in the 100 and 200 meter dash events and placed eighth in the long jump and 12th in the 100 meters at the state meet.
Delaware will take part in its first scrimmage this Saturday, April 20, at 10 a.m. at Delaware Stadium. A second scrimmage will be held next Saturday, April 27 before the Hens take part in the annual Blue-White Spring Game May 4 at 7 p.m. at Delaware Stadium.
