UD Equestrian wins national title

University of Delaware Equestrian Club rider Amanda Shallcross won the Miller's Cup Intermediate Equitation on the Flat Championship Friday night, May 3, at the 2002 Intercollegiate National Horse Show at Cazenovia (N.Y.) College.

As a team, the UD Equestrian Club placed eighth nationally in the Miller's Cup, which was contested during the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association national championship event held May 3-5.

In her event, Shallcross was followed by Franklin Bassett of Cazenovia College in second and Thomas Brennan of Stonehill College in third.

Nine other UD riders also competed during the national collegiate championships. They were Amanda McGeary, Sara Holland, Jessica Isbrecht, Ashlee Parsons, Christine Collins, Lauren Stille, Kelly Ross, Alyson Mansfield and Jennifer Flayhart.

Many other team members and parents were railside all weekend to cheer the riders on.

The team, coached by Brian Bradley, competes during the fall and spring at horse shows. It had won both regional and zone championships to earn a place at nationals.
