May 29, 2002 -- University of Delaware junior outfielder Doug Eitelman has been named to the Verizon/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) second team District II All-Academic team.
Eitelman, a junior civil engineering major from Wilmington, was one of 22 NCAA Division I players honored on the first and second teams. To be eligible, student-athletes must carry a 3.2 or better grade point average and be a starter or key reserve for their team.
The teams are selected from a vote of District II sports information directors, which includes Division I schools in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Washington, DC, and West Virginia. First team selections move on to the national ballot.
On honor student with a 3.494 gpa in civil engineering, Eitelman was a recipient of the University's Miles Powell, Jr., Scholarship last year for outstanding engineering major who are also athletics letterwinners.
A three-year letter winner, he has played outfield, first base and designated hitter during his career and led the Blue Hens to America East titles and NCAA Tournament appearances in both 2000 and 2001. He led the Blue Hens to a 35-22 record this spring.
This season he appeared in 51 games with 46 starts and batted .291 in 175 at bats. He banged out 51 hits, including 10 doubles, five triples and five home runs, and knocked in 42 runs. He also scored 30 runs and committed just two errors in 50 chances in the field.
He batted .317 with 11 runs batted in last season and hit .304 in 19 games as a freshman in 2000.
Earning first team honors were pitchers Ken Beck of Maryland and Gregg Farmery of Bucknell; catcher Chris Staub of Mt. St. Mary's; infielders Mike DeRenzo of Penn State, Nick Iovacchini of George Washington, Jeffrey Koenig of Mt. St. Mary's, Brian McKenna of Towson and John Rieg of Duquesne; outfielders Gregg Davies of Towson, Eric Fishman of Bucknell and Tye Gonser of Lafayette; and designated hitter Todd Crawford of Seton Hall.
The second team consisted of pitchers Thomas Pauly of Princeton and Brian Santo of Mt. St. Mary's; catcher Anthony Buffone of Maryland;infielders Scott Bacon of Towson, Nick Italiano of Pennsylvania and Larry Scheetz of Bucknell; and outfielders Eitelman, Tony Dokoupil of George Washington and Justin Godusky of Saint Joseph's.
