CoSIDA honors three UD student-athletes

June 7, 2002--Three graduating members of the University of Delaware women's track and field squad have been named to the Verizon/College Sports Information Directors of America All-District II University Division Women's Track and Field/Cross Country team.

Senior weight thrower Jennie Chiller and senior distance runner Monica Marchetta were named to the first team, while senior distance runner Aimee Alexander was named to the second team. Delaware, Duquesne, West Virginia and Bucknell led the way with three selections each on the two teams.

To be eligible for the team, student-athletes must carry a 3.2 or better grade point average and be a starter or key reserve for their team. The teams are selected from a vote of District II sports information directors, which includes NCAA Division I schools in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia. First team selections move on to the national ballot.

Chiller, a senior psychology major from Sharon, Mass., won four indoor weight throw meet titles and two outdoor hammer throw titles during the 2001-2002 season. She placed 16th in the weight throw at the ECAC indoor regionals in March and placed third in the hammer and 10th in the shot put at the Colonial Athletic Association outdoor championships in April.

She was a three-year letter winner and posted four top-eight finishes in the weight throw and hammer events in conference championship competition during her career. She graduated in May with a 3.740 grade point index.

Marchetta, a senior individual and family studies major from Milton, Mass., captured the 10,000 meter individual title at the Colonial Athletic Association outdoor championships in April and was 23rd at the CAA cross country championships in October.

This past season she was awarded the ECAC Medal of Merit as the UD female letter winner with the highest grade point index (3.949) and was co-winner of the University's Warner Award as the outstanding female student of the Class of 2002.

Alexander, a senior biology major with a minor in medical humanities from Stormville, N.Y., was named team co-captain and team Most Valuable Player in cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field during the 2001-2002 season. She earned 12 letters during her career and, as a senior, led the cross country team in all but one race and led all UD runners with a sixth place finish at the CAA championships.

During the track and field season, she placed 16th in the 3,000 meters at the ECAC indoor regionals, set a school indoor record in the 3,000 meters (9:52.63), captured the CAA 5,000 meter outdoor title and placed 14th in the 5,000 meters at the ECAC outdoor regionals. She posted nine top seven finishes in conference championship competition during her career. She carries a 3.389 grade point index.

In addition to Chiller and Marchetta, student-athletes named to the first team were Cleopatra Borel of UMBC; Tanya Brown, Kathleen McCabe and Shea McMillian of Duquesne; Marni Kruppa of Georgetown; Becki Marshall and Kelly McConnell of Bucknell; Beth Pile of St. Francis (Pa.); and Merissa Sexsmith of West Virginia.

Named to the second team were Alexander; Stephanie Bango of Bucknell; Amanday Hasenauer of Navy; Tyrona Heath of Georgetown; Kari McCarty of Mt. St. Mary's; Megan Metcalfe and Erin Nett of West Virginia; Lisa Ricciardelli of Monmouth; Bernadette Speer of Saint Joseph's; and Lindsey Stefan of St. Francis (Pa.).
