Gorecki, Schneider named to ABCA All-East teams

June 11, 2002--University of Delaware juniors Reid Gorecki and John Schneider have been selected to the American Baseball Coaches Association All-East Region teams.

Reid Gorecki

Gorecki, an outfielder, was one of five players from the Colonial Athletic Association named to the first team. His name will now appear on the All-American ballot. Schneider earned second-team honors at the catcher position.

Gorecki, a human relations major from East Rockaway, N.Y., who was recently drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals with 402nd pick in the 13th round of the Major League draft, adds this honor to first-team All-CAA and All-CAA Tournament Team accolades he received in May.

Gorecki finished third in the CAA with a team-high .414 batting average, to go along with 12 home runs, 12 doubles, 50 RBI and 34 stolen bases. He also led the conference with 66 runs scored and nine triples.

Schneider, a redshirt-junior from Lawrenceville, N.J., who was also drafted in the 13th round of the Major League draft by the Toronto Blue Jays with 386th overall pick, earned first-team All-CAA honors back in May as he led the Blue Hens with 15 doubles and 52 RBI, while gunning down 29 of 48 stolen base attempts.

John Schneider

Delaware posted its 13th consecutive winning season with a 35-22 record, finishing fourth in its first season in the CAA under Head Coach Jim Sherman this past spring.

Joining Gorecki on the All-East Region first-team were the CAA Player of the Year, first baseman Eddie Kim of James Madison, as well as the CAA Rookie of the Year pitcher Justin Verlander from Old Dominion.

Also on the first-team were second baseman Marc Tugwell of Virginia Tech, shortstop Matt Craig of Richmond, third baseman David Reaver of Richmond, designated hitter Brad Rea of Pittsburg, outfielder Gregg Davies of Towson, outfielder Mike Bassett of George Washington, pitcher Jared Doyle of James Madison, pitcher Tim Stauffer of Richmond, pitcher Joe Saunders of Virginia Tech and relief pitcher James Russell of Villanova.

The second team was made up of Schneider, first baseman Vito Chiaravallotti of Richmond, second baseman Eric Hoffman of Lehigh, shortstop Casey Long of Rider, third baseman Matt Krimmel of George Washington, designated hitter Bruce Boehm of Drexel, outfielder Jeff Frazier of Rutgers, outfielder Phil Sullinger of Delaware State, outfielder Walter Majewski of Rutgers, outfielder Scott Martin of Delaware State, pitcher Whit Farr of William & Mary, pitcher Mike McGirr of Richmond, Bobby Brownlie of Rutgers and relief pitchers Brian Marshall of Virginia Commonwealth and Justin Orenduff of George Washington.

The All-East Region team is voted on by the ABCA/Rawlings All-American Selection Committee.
