Blue Hen nine sweeps Delaware State

The University of Delaware baseball team swept a doubleheader at Delaware State on Wednesday, May 1, winning the first game 8-3 and the second 8-7.

Delaware (29-17, 9-4 in Colonial Athletic Association) will be back in action this weekend, hosting Hofstra University in a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series at Bob Hannah Stadium. The series will open at 3 p.m., Friday, May 3, and continue at 1 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, May 4-5.

The Hens will play at UMBC on Tuesday, May 7, then will face CAA opponent William and Mary in a three-game series May 9-11 before closing out the regular season with a home game against Villanova May 15.

The CAA tournament will be held May 21-25 in Manteo, N.C.

Against Delaware State, junior righthander Ryan Dulaney had his best outing of the season to pick up the win in the first game. He allowed just three hits and two earned runs, and earned his first complete game victory as a Blue Hen.

In that game, UD's Reid Gorecki scored two runs, although he went hitless in four at-bats snapping his 22-game hitting-streak.

In the second game, the Hornets (33-17) jumped out to a three-run lead in the first inning but the Hens fought back, scoring eight unanswered runs before DSU mounted a comeback attempt in the seventh and final inning. Delaware State scored four runs and loaded the bases with one out before Delaware reliever Steve Harden retired the final two batters to end the ballgame.

UD's Kris Dufner belted his sixth home run of the season, a three-run shot, as he finished the game 2-for-3, while Matt Wimer added two hits of his own, including an RBI double.

Chris Garrick picked up his second victory of the season, pitching four scoreless innings in relief.
