McGuire sets career strikeout record

Rich McGuire

Senior pitcher Rich McGuire surpassed Matt Phillips as the University of Delaware's all-time leader in strikeouts in a 17-5 victory over intrastate rival Delaware State University Monday night, April 22, at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington.

Rich McGuire struck out Eddy Linares in the second inning for his 236th career stikeout, passing the mark held by Phillips.

The senior right-hander struck out a season-high eight batters over six innings allowing just two hits to pick up his fifth victory of the season.

Redshirt freshman Brock Donovan led the UD attack, with three hits, two walks, two runs batted in and three runs scored.

Delaware's Mark Michael blasted two doubles and knocked in a total of five runs as the Blue Hens posted their third straight victory over Delaware State this season.

Also for Delaware (23-15), junior Reid Gorecki scored three runs and collected a pair of hits to run his current hitting-streak to 16 games, the most by any Blue Hen since Brian August batted safely in 16-consecutive games in 1995.

At the plate for the Hornets (31-15), Phil Sullinger belted two doubles, walked twice and knocked in a pair of runs.

The Blue Hens will hit the road once again on Wednesday, April 24, when they travel out to State College, Pa., for a double-header with Penn State at 1 p.m.

Delaware will then play a three-game Colonial Athletic Association weekend set at Virginia Commonwealth in Richmond.

The Hens will return to Bob Hannah Stadium for a game against Rutgers at 3 p.m., Tuesday, April 30. That will be the Comcast CN8 TV Game of the Week.
