McGuire pitches Delaware to first win of season

TSenior pitcher Rich McGuire threw seven strong innings and designated hitter Doug Eitelman ripped a two-run triple in the third as the University of Delaware baseball team topped Furman 3-1 on Saturday, March 1, for its first win of the season.

Jason Rogers pitched the final two innings to earn the save for the Blue Hens.

UD, which is 1-7, has opened the season with a difficult Southern schedule, having met such powers as East Carolina, San Diego, Cal State-Northridge and Oklahoma State.

The Hens return to Newark for a home stand that will open at 3 p.m., Wednesday, March 6, against Rider at Bob Hannah Stadium.

UD will then play a three-game home series against Delaware State, at 3 p.m., Friday, March 8, and at noon, Saturday and Sunday, March 9-10.

The Hens will host Quinnipiac at 3 p.m., Tuesday, March 12, then will welcome Boston College for a doubleheader at noon Saturday, March 16, and a single game at noon, Sunday, March 17.
