E. Harry Law, professor of mechanical engineering at Clemson University, and his wife, Linda B. Law, advising coordinator for the general engineering program at Clemson, know a little bit about academic life. When son Eric, AS 2001, decided to go away to college, the family went looking for a "medium-sized university in the North that had a lot of variety in case he wanted to change his major," Linda says. The University of Delaware felt just right.
As Eric prepares to spend the fall semester studying Spanish at the University of Granada in Spain, his parents wrote a letter of thanks to University President David P. Roselle. Some excerpts are printed here:
"First and foremost, Eric has received excellent academic advising. He entered as an undeclared major, so he enjoyed the benefits of the College of Arts and Science Advising Center. His adviser, Patricia Jeffery, has done an exceptional job of guiding Eric and helping him learn how to be a successful student. She took the time to get to know him as an individual, something that's not easy to accomplish with so many advisees. We want you to know that we believe that all freshmen should have access to an advising center like yours.
"Second, Eric has enjoyed all of his classes. He's been happy with all of his professors, has had very reasonably sized classes and has gotten good advising in his chosen majors--philosophy and political science.
"Thirdly, Eric's housing has been wonderful. He's comfortable living on campus, which we believe all underclassmen should do. He doesn't even complain about the food, which is almost unheard of on campuses today!
"Finally, we really enjoy reading the UD Messenger. It is informative and well-written, and helps us, as out-of-state parents, feel connected to our son's institution."
