Fall 1999

A day to honor achievement

More than 50 students were recognized at the College of Business and Economics' Honors Day ceremony in May. The College, along with the other colleges at the University, hosts the ceremony each year to recognize students' outstanding academic performances. At the event, the department chairpersons acknowledged excellence by selected students in the departments of Accounting and MIS, Business Administration, Finance and Economics. Several awards were also presented to outstanding students active in the Fortune 2000 program.

In addition, Dean Kenneth Biederman presented three awards. Since two seniors earned perfect 4.0 grade point averages, the Distinguished Senior Award was presented to both Farah Haq and Mark Messina. Haq, of Tully, N.Y., graduated in May with a major in marketing and minors in biology and MIS. Messina, from Wilmington, Del., graduated with a major in finance and minors in economics and MIS. The B&E Alumni Association Award was presented to Stephanie Waters, 2000, an accounting major. The third award, the University of Delaware Alumni Association's Outstanding Academic Achievement Award, was presented to Edward (Ted) Sloyer, 2000, also an accounting major.

Awards were presented to faculty as well. The Leon and Margaret Slocomb Professional Excellence Award is presented to individuals demonstrating an exemplary commitment to public service, community involvement and innovative activity. This year's recipients were Linda Dunn, assistant dean; William Latham, associate professor of economics; Lalita Manrai, associate professor of marketing; and Kent St. Pierre, chairperson of the Department of Accounting and MIS.

Following the ceremony, honor society inductions were held for eligible juniors and seniors. The day's events concluded with a reception hosted by President David P. Roselle at the Perkins Student Center.
