Jane E. Mitchell, HNS '63, the first African-American nurse to be employed in a hospital in Delaware, was honored in December with a building in her name. Mitchell began her nursing career at Delaware State Hospital, now known as the Delaware Psychiatric Center, where she served as director of nursing from 1969 to 1979. At the building's dedication, Mitchell was cited as "an exemplary role model" who has "graced our state many times over with her commitment and dedication to all in need." A member of the UD Wall of Fame, Mitchell serves on the visiting committee of the College of Health and Nursing Sciences and helps to recruit minority students for its School of Nursing.
