Alumni Club events

January-June 1998

The East Coast Florida Alumni Club hosted a gathering for Delaware alumni and friends on Jan. 7 at Vesuvio Restaurant in Pompano Beach, complete with an Italian buffet dinner.

On Jan. 23, Helen Carnevale, AS '86, was featured as the Alumni Focus Artist for the Performing Arts Series. Before her performance of Caliente! in Mitchell Hall, the New Castle County Area Alumni Club hosted an exclusive "meet the artist" reception at the Trabant University Center.

The College of Human Resources, Education and Public Policy sponsored a reception Jan. 25 for alumni and friends of the college, followed by a University of Delaware men's basketball game. The reception, which took place on the concourse of the Bob Carpenter Sports/Convocation Center, included a special appearance by the Blue Hen mascot, YoUDee, and the UD cheerleaders. The men's basketball team won the game against Boston University.

The Office of Alumni and University Relations sponsored a golf outing and cocktail reception Feb. 2 for alumni and friends who live in the Bonita Bay, Fla., area. David and Louise Roselle hosted the event, which took place at the Bonita Bay Club in Bonita Springs.

On Feb. 13, UD alumni, family and friends attended a reception at the Fred Rust Ice Arena, followed by a UD ice hockey club game against Towson State. The Blue Hens were victorious in the game with a 4-2 win.

The following day, Feb. 14, the ice hockey club and the Office of Alumni and University Relations hosted a special reception and alumni game for ice hockey alumni, who enjoyed the opportunity to be back on the ice and catch up with their former teammates.

The Philadelphia Alumni Club hosted an event Feb. 18 in Dave and Busters at Penn's Landing. Guests enjoyed a full buffet of hors d'oeuvres and, to top off the evening, alumni were presented with individual Power Cards, which allowed them to operate more than 200 interactive amusements, simulators and games of skill.

University of Delaware alumni and friends of the Atlanta Alumni Club gathered Feb. 24 at LuLu's Bait Shack, located in the Buckhead district of Atlanta. Alumni of classes ranging from 1940 to 1997 shared memories of their UD experiences.

The Northern Florida Alumni Club hosted a gathering at Cheers in Jacksonville on Feb. 25. This event was attended by alumni and friends, who indulged in a spread of food while enjoying the opportunity to meet and talk with fellow alumni from the area.

The New Castle County Area Alumni Club gathered March 19 at Klondike Kate's on Main Street in Newark. It was a great opportunity for alumni and friends to come back to campus and visit one of their favorite hangouts.

On March 25, Phoenix area alumni gathered at Macayo's Mexican Restaurant for an evening of Delaware memories. Guests enjoyed the festive Mexican decor, a Mexican-style buffet and the company of fellow alumni. Enthusiastic UD alumni discussed plans for future activities in the Phoenix area.

University of Delaware alumni from the Dallas Alumni Club enjoyed an elegant, evening reception March 26 at the Yorkshire Club in downtown Dallas. The event also included a buffet of gourmet hors d'oeuvres. Musical entertainment was provided by a classical guitarist.

On March 27, alumni and friends attended a Houston Alumni Club event at Dave and Busters on Richmond Avenue. Guests spent the first two hours getting to know other alumni from the area, and then they finished off the evening playing shuffleboard, interactive amusements and virtual reality games.

The University of Delaware Blue Hen baseball team played the Wilmington Blue Rocks in an exhibition game April 8 at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington, with all proceeds benefiting Blue Hen baseball. Alumni, family and friends from the New Castle County area gathered for a pregame dinner at the Blue Rocks Cafe in Frawley Stadium. Although the UD team was defeated, alumni and friends cheered them on to the end.

The Charlotte, N.C., Alumni Club hosted its first event April 15 at The Graduate on Morehead Street there. A buffet was followed by a slide presentation about the University.

On April 16, the Triangle Area Alumni Club (Raleigh/Durham and Chapel Hill, N.C.) gathered for a Durham Bulls baseball game and pregame reception. It was opening day for the Bulls who played the Louisville Redbirds. UD alumni, family and friends gathered at the Down Under Pub before the game to enjoy hot dogs, roast beef sandwiches, salads and desserts. Although the game was delayed one hour because of a sudden downpour, guests used the time for more reminiscing and talking with fellow alumni.

The UD lacrosse team celebrated its 50th anniversary April 18 by hosting a Day of Lacrosse Action for alumni and their families and friends of the University. UD lacrosse alumni played alumni from Loyola University on the practice fields located at the David M. Nelson Athletic Complex. Around noon, a buffet lunch was served to more than 300 attendees. Afterward, the UD men's varsity team played Loyola University in Delaware Stadium.

A live, musical performance of The Secret Garden was presented by Theatreworks/USA April 19 at Mitchell Hall, as part of the University's Junior Performing Arts Series. Children of all ages (and adults) enjoyed the enchanting tale of how miracles can and do happen in the magical secret garden. After the performance, alumni, family and friends from the New Castle County area attended a reception on The Mall in front of Mitchell Hall.

The Washington, D.C., Area Alumni Club hosted another successful event for local alumni and friends April 29 at the Union Station Pizzeria Uno, which provided an outstanding view of the open atrium of the Union Station mall. A networking list of area alumni was distributed to all those who attended.

On April 30, the Richmond Alumni Club gathered at the historic Tobacco Company Restaurant in downtown Richmond for its first event.

The Boston Alumni Club enjoyed an evening of Red Sox baseball May 6, preceded by a reception held across the street from Fenway Park at Jillian's Billiards. After a buffet dinner and unlimited games of pool, alumni and friends watched the Red Sox take on the Minnesota Twins.

The Philadelphia Alumni Club held its annual Dad Vail Regatta event May 9. Despite horrible weather, more than 40 UD alumni and friends gathered under the University's tent for a gourmet picnic luncheon. Although the crew competition was canceled, the guests had a great time meeting other alumni and reminiscing about their college years.

On June 2, the Central New Jersey Alumni Club hosted a Trenton Thunder baseball game and pregame reception. The reception was held at KatManDu Restaurant, located adjacent to Mercer County Waterfront Park.

The Baltimore Area Alumni Club hosted its third annual University of Delaware Day at Camden Yards. The event was held June 7, beginning at noon, with a catered buffet luncheon on the sixth floor of the Ballpark Warehouse. After lunch, more than 200 guests watched the Baltimore Orioles play the Atlanta Braves, a sell-out event.

Alumni and friends from the Washington, D.C., Area Alumni Club gathered June 9 at Carrol's Creek Seafood Restaurant in Annapolis. The event included a slide presentation about the University, plenty of food and lots of Delaware spirit.
