A summer checklist
Preparations for Summer Sessions at the University have been under way since January, and, once again, more than 500 classes are expected to be offered.
Beginning June 8, the first session includes both 5-week and 7-1/2-week courses. The second session offers another 5-week set starting July 13, immediately after the first session ends.
Registration for both sessions continues through the fourth day of each class. When deciding whether Summer Sessions will be beneficial, you and your student might consider the following questions.
- What is the pace of this year's workload and next year's? Sometimes, learning is easier and more successful if a course load is spread across more than the two 14-week semesters. Summer classes can help a student catch up after a lighter-than-average year or get ahead by banking extra credits.
- Are there popular courses that your student could not fit into the fall or spring schedules? Summer sometimes offers another chance to get into those heavily subscribed courses or add them earlier in a college career. In summer, underclass students are on an equal footing with seniors because summer registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Would summer be a good time to fulfill multicultural and distribution requirements? Many of these courses are offered in the summer, and students can find printed lists of requirements specific to each college and major at college advisement offices and the Student Services Building, as well as on the University's home page <http://www.udel.edu>.
- Is it more convenient to attend classes away from the main campus in Newark? During the summer, a number of UD courses are available on campuses in Wilmington, Dover and Georgetown, Del., and FOCUS courses are offered in a videotape format. Many internships award credits while your student works and learns about a possible career. There also are several UD study-abroad programs offered during the summer-in Spain, Japan, France, England and Switzerland.
