Stepping up to plate

When he was contacted last fall during UD's phonathon, John C. Woodward, BE '74, made a $500 pledge. But when he sat down to write the check to his alma mater, he made it out for $5,000. Woodward, who owns the Third and Spruce Cafe in West Reading, Pa., says he "thought it was about time to step up to the plate" after paying off the renovation loans for his restaurant, which now seats 300 people and has 22 television screens mostly tuned to sports events. Before Christmas, Woodward and a college friend reminisced during a visit about the good times at Delaware and that also prompted his larger gift, Woodward says.
